So for all of those with the 6 speed GTO's, how do you like your transmission? Does it feel rough when you shift, or smooth. I was wondering because I have noticed that several cars entering the market in the last year have not had the best transmissons.

Any feedback would be great, thanks!

I'd say it's about like an F-Body tranny, judging by the cars I test drove over the last 5 years. The stock shifter has to go. The stock clutch will probably need an upgrade if you plan on running your car hard. But it's solid enough once you get it into gear.

That sounds like a F-Body compliment, I'm impressed :)

Actually, it's not. But since I have to explain everything for you, here it is:

The stock shifter in the GTO is the same as the stock shifter in the F-Body. i.e. it's a rubbery piece of junk. It should have been better and needs to be upgraded. Hell, the shifter in my 3/4 ton Dodge diesel pickup has a better feel to it and not much shorter throw.

The stock clutch in the GTO is the same as the stock clutch in the F-Body. i.e. it's too small and doesn't hold up to abuse very well. It needs to be upgraded.

These shortcomings aside, the tranny is decent enough for a stock motor. It should hold up fine. Once you get the clutch and shifter up to snuff, it will equal the superior quality the GTO has over every other aspect of the F-Body.

Sounds like a compliment to me. You just down everything about the Fbody, no matter what it is. But I'm used to the closeminded attitude, and I think it's just a little game with you.

Keep it civil people. Just a reminder before anyone starts to fan the flames.

OK, how about a different angle (and yes, I am ignoring the topic for this forum...)

I like the M6 a lot (whataya know, I tied it in anyhow) but may decide the shifter's too mushy - jury's still out on that one. Sooo...

In the future, a new shifter might be in order for me. It would have to use the stock lever (or knob and boot, at least) because I like the look.

That got me thinking, though, about other things that might get changed. Not much, actually. Someone on another thread (forgot who) put mentioned a Whipple and it was like a bell going off! Whipple tells me they have plans in the works but that a huffer kit for the GTO won't be out until '05 - which is plenty soon for me. A new clutch would probably make sense then too, you think? Other than that, a little more rubber in back would likely be appropriate but I'd like to keep the appearance as near stock as possible so, when the time comes, I'll be looking for wheels that very closely match OEM.

What else? Not thinking about hoods or scoops or spoilers or wings or whatever. Simply largely invisible performance improvements...

I'd love to have higher expectations for you but I guess that's like trying to push a rope.

Try actually reading my posts and understand what I have to say about the F-Body before trying to put words in my mouth.
