does anyone know why in the M6 occasionally you will have to shift 1st to 4th and then other times you do not? I am confused with this since I have gotten the car. Does it really do damage to the transmission shifting from 1st to 2nd or is it a matter of just being more economic with fuel. i'd appreciate any feedback...

It's there for fuel economy. Very easy to bypass, and well worth it for ease of driving.

If your within a certain speed and RPM range, it forces the skip shift to activate. Alot of people complain about it, but it doesn't bother me.

Along with the speed and RPM range, the car must be at operating temperatures. Personally I only had one time it activated before I got rid of it - and I don't think it would have happened again other than times in traffic when I didn't want to shift. You can buy a bypass for it from some of the sponsors or get a resistor and bypass it if it bothers you.
