i think it would be good to have a posted maintenance section just touching on what kind of maintenance people are doing on their car..what people are cleaning their car with....what type of grade and gas people are using...type of oil...etc. etc...I am a proud new owner and want to know what everyone uses in their own car. thanks

The LS1 requires premium fuel, so thats a must. And if you care about your car you will use Zaino car polish.

I don't know about the F-body, but the GTO owners manual says 91 octane or higher is recommended for best performance, but not required: use of 87 or higher is permitted, but performance will be reduced. Anything below 87 will cause knocking and engine damage.
I will admit to putting in 87 a few times for long highway trips...

I switched to Mobil 1 at 3000 miles.

What is Zaino? I've heard it mentioned several times here, but have never heard of it before. I'm using Meguiars Hi Tech Yellow wax right now... seems pretty good, maybe too good: I've tried that Mr. Clean autodry car wash and it beaded up and left water spots. About to go give it a final try right now...

www.zainostore.com

This is the best car polish out there. The site explains it all.

I haven't personally but have a buddy who has used it on his mustang. He says the soap is total garbage, but the ionized water filter rinse leaves little to no water spots. Personally, I just have a quality chamois that I use. I see no need to spend all that extra cash for fancy water systems.

Agree, the Mr Clean is a POS. Also, if you want to learn about car care, as in waxes, cleaners etc. www.autopia.org Everything you EVER wanted to know.
And TandA, don't take this wrong but.... there are a lot of polishes/waxes as good or better than Zaino.

Maintenance report:

04 GTO current mileage: 521 miles
Got 1st oil change today at Pennzoil 10 minute lube and switched to 10W40
Only put 91 Premium Unleaded gas.

What's Zaino??

I have only used Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover for all my cars. It also helps that they are garaged so their original showroom shine is preserved for many years. You should see my 1994 Chevy Camaro. It's black too. Still gets compliments.

I have not heard from anyone that has had anything good to say about the Mr. Clean system so I have not tried it.

I use Zaino and like it. I use the Z-6 for spot cleaning all the time. I know that other people are just as happy with what they use. Bottom line is be happy about it.

I have switched to Mobil 1 because it makes me feel good. With regular oil changes I don't think that it really matters all that much whether you use dino oil or not.

Now that we have all gotten away from the original subject (THE NEED FOR A MAINTINANCE FORUM SECTION) I think this is proof that one is needed - and I couldn't agree more.

Even though some of the subject matter can be - and is - covered in Engine Tech, a general mainitinace section would be helpful for basic questions that don't deal with modifications. Besides, paint care shouldn't be in Engine Tech anyway.

I will try and add one over the weekend. Unless Skie can before me!

ZIANO ZAINO!!
I would say beware of any wax that is Yellow. You wouldn't want to dull the color of your paint, just polish it. This is a disadvantage to carnauba wax - it has a yellowing tint to it. You can even call Zaino and talk directly to the owner for advise on thier products and basic car care. He is a great guy, owned a Viper and '02 T/A when I talked to him and I found that all his advise was valid. I followed 99% of it. I will NEVER use anything else but ZAINO on my T/A now.

Don't waste your $$$. It's not worth the time and effort. I used it and still had waterspots. <_< Just use a nice chamois.
