Was talking to a couple customers in Oz about what taller gears are available for the Monaro and one said he can get 3.07 gears if i want. I know it will reduce my initial take off, but will greatly increase my gas mileage on the freeway and in So Cal it is all freeway.
I am not a vendor for this forum just a regular joe blow that is in the axle and gear business. Just curious if anyone else with an A4 would want a taller ratio to reduce high end RPM's? If there are enough "yes i want the taller gear" i will register as a vendor and get more coming than just my own. Gears would be low mileage dealer takeouts from from the 4 door family car version of the Monaro called the Commodore. Cost of the gears would be around $300.00 US.
Anyone interested?

Seems it would be a better idea since the auto has 2 less gears.

I am so surprised that the GTO automatic has only 4 gears....at a minimum it should have 5 and then i would have bought one...
now am not sure if either to get the 4 or 6 speed?
i like the idea of the automactic as you have to do is put your foot down!

I'm going for the manual tranny myself. I dont feel that it is right to have a high performance car w.o manual. Drivin an A4 would be like putting a siliencer on a harley, ya just dont do it.

I do not even want to imagine how slow the A4 would be with a set of 3.07s... :(

I was hoping the GTO would have the 5 or 6 speed automatic, not a 4 speed. I probably would have purchased one also if it was offerec in more than a 4 speed auto.
I was thinking that in 2006 it may have the 6 speed auto, but I probably won't buy one then either because it will then be a year away from the redesign onto the new platform.
If I did have a GTO, however, I might look into the taller gears. I do mostly highway driving, plus an added bonus would be that the car would stay in first gear longer. I had a 2000 Trans am with the 2.73's and a 2002 Z28 with the 3.23's. While the 3.23's gave the car more pick-up from a stop, for the way I drove the 2.73's actually gave me BETTER performance. The 3.23's got the car out of first gear so fast, that every time I went around a turn, or did any accelerating other than flooring it, the car would be in the much higher second gear too quick. While in the 2.73's first would seem steeper, I could make better use of it because it stayed in first longer.
I'd rather be still in a moderate first gear at 30 mph than in a very steep and tall second gear at 20. (under moderate, not heavy acceleration, that is).
Of course, the point is a 5 or 6 speed automatic would take care of this problem totally (with second gear not being so steep) as well as increase mileage.

Why did you buy a GTO? seems like you need a caddy or a beemer. :hysterical:
