God I hate the stock shifter travel. The factory knob looks so good until you start shifting the ****ed thing. It feels like those cheap nickel slots in Las Vegas!
:D
I started my quest for a better short throw shifter and started snooping around the Holden LS1 forums. First, I was going to install the Rip Shifter but it's going to cost upwards of $500!!!!
So I finally found a more reasonable alternative for $200 bucks and it arrived today. I still haven't mustered the balls to start dismantling my stock shifter to install this but should be done by next week. Will keep everyone posted!!!

Had the day off and the weather in KS was great except for a little wind so I pulled my shifter out. I am truly supprised that it worked as well as it did with all those piviot points. Installed a B&M and boy what a difference. Side to side movement is really decreased and it is real easy going from one gear to the next and the shifts are a lot better. Makes it look like I still know how to shift. The best mod so far.

DESERTGOAT Who makes the shifter that you bought? Where did you find it? The way it looks you still use the stock shift handle. Any info you can send to me and help. B)

That looks like the Harrop Shifter. This is the only place I have seen it:

click on "other related components"
Doesn't look like they proofread their description "Offers 30% more throw"
I haven't heard anything about this unit.

I am waiting for the Hurst shift kit to come out. I found out they just finished pre-production on it and it should be out soon. So I will wait for it. Hurst is the only way I will go.

I am also interested in knowing how to change the stock shifter. how do i get the stock knob off without breaking it like someone else did in this forum. Thanks a bunch.

changing the shifter is a bear. the first thing i can suggest is to get some hex head bolts for the front plate holes when you re-install. those will take you the longest to do. also remove the tranny crossmember mount so the trans drops down a little. you'll need the room. follow the directions and oh, use red locktite. also don't do what i did and miss the tranny shifter "cup" when you re-install. you'll have to do it twice then :D the knob was easy. the directions said to jerk up. didn't seem like a good idea so my son and i unbolted the handle from the shifter and looked at it. there are 4 plastic clips you can see from the underside. we carefully pried them away a bit and inserted four tooth picks. knob slid right off.
BTW the Rip Shifter was about $360 including freight.

The B&M I put in mine cost only $150. Man the shift times greatly decreased. Should shave a couple of the 0-60 times.

I put the B&M on mine as well. It was a little bit awkward at first but after about 15 min of driving I was used to it. Both the manual cars Ive had have been really really long throws. My 96 accent had such a long throw I might as well have been trying to elbow the rear passengers in the face. I really like this short throw a lot. Installation is easy as hell. Only 20 min or so and I was done. I was a little scared when the instructions told me to bash off the factor nobb with a hammer or something similar to that.
