It is not exactly known why they call the GTO the goat. One of the reasons you said is one of the theorys. GTOs could eat anything on the street just like goats are known for eating just about anything. The other theory is that the closest word to GTO is goat like what Nocturn said. The word goat is a derivative of the letters G-T-O and it probably just caught on when they first arrived and somebody wanted to call it affectionately. I don't know, i'm guessing just like you are in Australia since I wasn't even born when the first goats came out.
