: why is the GTO a GOAT?
hsvrichie 08-06-2004, 07:52 AM Why is the GTO called the GOAT? i am from australia and have never got why you call it the goat, i mean it doesnt look like a goat, goats dont really do anything ether... besides eat anything they can for example rice :D
Nocturn 08-06-2004, 08:36 AM Ever try to pronounce the word "GTO" it comes out something close to goat, so I think that why most people started calling it that, its easier than saying GTO, or Gran tourismo Omolagato.... :D

Well your onto the right idea. It is not exactly known why they call the GTO the goat. One of the reasons you said is one of the theorys. GTOs could eat anything on the street just like goats are known for eating just about anything. The other theory is that the closest word to GTO is goat like what Nocturn said. So its one of these.
desertgoat 08-06-2004, 12:50 PM Americans have a love affair with naming cars after animals:
Viper, Cobra, Impala, Cougar, Mustang, etc......
The word goat is a derivative of the letters G-T-O and it probably just caught on when they first arrived and somebody wanted to call it affectionately. I don't know, i'm guessing just like you are in Australia since I wasn't even born when the first goats came out.
Maybe one of the first owners ran over his goat with his car and started calling it right after that, who knows?

forestdweller 08-06-2004, 03:19 PM I'm from over here and I don't get it either. I still don't get GOAT out of the Gran tourismo thing...
Viper, Cobra, etc atleast they are deadly animals!

The 2 reasons that I gave are the reasons that I have heard from GTO experts. Remember a goat can eat anything.
2004Goat 08-06-2004, 05:14 PM I never got that either. At least they don't call it a rooster or a donkey.

Short History of GTO (http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/pontiac-gto/pontiac-gto.shtml)
GTO name (http://www.gtoheaven.com/gtostats/gtostats.html)
GT: Short for "Gran Turismo," literal Italian for "Grand Touring," it refers to a class of cars originally built for racing and sporty touring. In the purest sense of the term, the grand touring classification meant that a car was an enclosed coupe.
The "O" stands for "omologato," which is Italian for "homologated." This means that the model is a regular production model, not just a limited-production option designed only for racing or rallys.
hsvrichie 08-08-2004, 07:07 AM how quick were these goats if they could eat anything? i want to compare them to the aussie cars at the same time
forestdweller 08-08-2004, 05:28 PM We were referring to the animal goat :)

jasfirst234 08-12-2004, 04:43 PM I don't care why it's called what it is, as long as it can destroy whatever comes up against it...I'm fine with it being a chipmunk or a sparrow. It just has to go... B)
