A YOUNG MAN N TOWN HERE HAS A 40TH ANVERSERY TURBO T-BIRD. HES GOT HEADERS AND A FULL DUAL EXHAUST AND RUNS 14-15 LBS OF BOOST. I THINK HE'S GOT MORE MODS THAN THAT BUT HE WASN'T SAYING. WE WENT OUT ON THIS OLD COUNTRY ROAD AND LINED UP. I HAD MY WINDOW DOWN AND TOLD HIM TO SAY GO AND WE'LL START. (I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE FAIRLY EASY) HE REVS THE ENGINE UP AND YELLS READY, SET,GO AND WE'RE OFF. HIS FRONT BUMPER IS 2 FT IN FRONT. I HIT 2ND AND CHIRP THE TIRES AND START TO SLOWLY GAIN. AFTER I HIT THIRD WITH MY WINDOW STILL DOWN I HEARD HIM HIT 3RD ALSO (HE HAS AN AUTO) I REALLY PULLED AWAY :) AT THE FINISH I WAS ABOUT 3 1/2 LENGTHS AHEAD :D HIS GEAR RATIO FROM 2ND TO 3RD WAS A BIG JUMP AND BOGGED HIS ENGINE DOWN. IF HE'D OF HAD A STICK I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSER. THAT CAR IS QUICK FOR A V6! IT WAS A LOT OF FUN . BOTH OF US HAD A GOOD TIME, EVEN THOUGH HE LOST, HE WAS A GOOD SPORT ABOUT IT.

Unless i'm mistaken, the turbocharged T-birds were roughly 2.3L inline 4's. But yea, they can make some pretty sick power through those motors. I know of a turbo 4 Mustang that ran 11's around here.

Jason's right, the Turbocharged Fords were 2.3L, basically a modernized Pinto engine. There were some pretty heavy duty parts floating around and one of the locals got his Pinto well into the 10's on a pretty heavily modified setup. I used to see a fair number of 12-second street driven turbo birds back in the day...which was pretty fast considering Corvettes of the day ran 14's.

The supercharged birds had a 3.8L V6 and were capable of making obscene power with just a wastegate...well, until they spit their guts all over the street, that is ;) I worked with a guy that did the prototype intake that said it was capable of spinning the tires at 50 mph with no other mods. Too bad they were so ugly and all of 2 tons, or I might have bought one.

I worked with a guy who used to pull the boost regulator and race for pink slips back on 'graph in late '80's. IIRC he paid for 3 or 4 new motors plus a bunch of other toys selling the cars he won. Nowadays he'd probably get shot.

U R CORRECT IT WAS A 3.8L V6 SUPERCHARGED NOT TURBOCHARGED
HES RUNNING A ROOTS STYLE BLOWER WITH AN INNERCOOLER AND HE THINKS ITS A 3.27 REAR END. :D

Yea those are pretty quick too. I've never seen one better than 12's before but I dont doubt some people have done 13's in them easily. Good kill none the less.

Just wanting to clarify a couple things....The turbo 4 cyl T-bird was made until 1988. 1989 - 1995 the 3.8 V6 supercharged T-bird was available. The 40th anniversary T-bird (1995) was never available with a forced induction engine, only a N/A 3.8L (~140hp)or N/A 4.6L (~200hp) I've got a green 4.6L 40th, along with a Supercoupe.

I am betting this was a 1990 35th Anniversary T-bird. Those were only avalailable with the supercharged 3.8L, with the AOD automatic or a 5-speed manual. They were all black, with silver ground effects, and black wheels. It should run a mid - low 15 sec 1/4 stock. About 14 PSi is the stock boost level.

There are a few of the supercharged V6 into the 11's now. But parts aren't cheap or easy to get since most has to be homemade. The aftermarket just does not support those cars.

35th anniversay T-bird (http://www.sccoa.com/multimedia/christopherwise11.9run.mpg)

Just for kicks there is a link to a dragstrip video of a 35th anniversary T-bird with quite a few mods. Sadly, that car was rear ended and totalled shortly after this video was taken. The owner bought another body and swapped the drivetrain over, he got that setup to run 11.1 in the 1/4 before selling the car. The new owner is working on swapping the Eaton for a Whipple to run 10's.
