How wide of a tire can be placed on the rear of the GTO. The vette has such a huge advantage with them big ole meats under her. I love playing cat and mouse with my dad in his vette. I think with some wider tires, I can get a little better traction and handling, it is bad enough he has 55hp and 500lbs on me. Any ideas. Thanks

Not exactly sure...you might be able to put 9 on the rear without a major headache depending on what kind of rims you use. Anything bigger and you're probably going to need some big $$$ for offset.

This is a very old and popular subject. A couple of the GTO aftermarket retailers, including Howie at AP, have spent alot of time test fitting wheels. Here's a clip from another forum that I found very useful in selecting mine. Note that it is a guideline, as I found that 17x8 with a +38 on the front worked just fine (no rubbing anywhere) and the list below shows a +39 as minimum:
NEW BOLT PATTERN FOR GENERAL MOTORS 5x120mm
WIDTH OFFSET WIDTH OF TIRE
7.0… +26/+65 215/225/235
7.5 +33/+61 215/225/235/245
8.0 +39/+55 225/235/245
8.5 +45/+48 235/245/255
9.0 (MAX) +48 245/255
REAR ONLY
8.0 +36/+65 245/255
8.5 +42/+65 245/255
9.0 +48/+65 255/265/275
9.5 +55/+64 265/275/285
Offsets greater than shown above will rub on rear fender lip (25mm fender lip).
Another fella posted this: "I have a set of wheels from ROH, the rears are 18x9 51mm 275/35 and front are 18x8 41mm 245/40, with Nittos, no need to roll. BFG or Dunlop you may need to roll?"
