So now I have my Grand Prix and a worthy engine, one has to start doing modifications. :D

I was looking at maybe changing the air filter to an Air Hog or a K&N as they claim to improve horsepower etc. How valid are the claims, is anyone using them and is it worth the money?

thanks, James

Many consider them the first simple mod, but every dyno test I have heard of showed no gain whatsoever. There is however risk with oil based filters like the K&N because (from what I've been told) the vast majority unknowingly over oil them after cleaning. This isn't good because the oil gets sucked into the engine and can ruin the MAF and other sensors.

First thing I did when I bought my 99 GTP new was drop in a K&N.

If it gives you anything don't expect 2 or 3 HP tops if that. You won't even notice it.

What it does give you is a quality air filter and you will NEVER have to buy another if you maintain it correctly. Put 150000 miles on the car and it will "pay" for itself instead of buying the cheapie paper filters every 20,000 miles or so.

Don't overoil when you clean them and you won't have to worry about any "side effects".

I feel they are worth the money if you are going to keep the car for a long time. Of course if you are thinking about a cold-air intake kit for your GP you would want to hold off as you'd just be wasting money on a filter that won't work with a cold-air kit cone style filter.

I've also seen data from K&N that shows they flow more air when dirty over comprable paper filters when dirty. Not sure anyone independent has done these tests to back up this claim though.

Hope that helps. :)

For good quality GP advise I would go to www.grandprix.net cause there are a few good intake option and those guys would be able to give you the skinny.

Is there any truth to what I heard that K & N filters are not designed for California emissions? or that just the filtercharger?
