Why are we getting raped on the hole shot?

I keep seeing the same post. “Got beat out of the hole but” or “I gave him a head start” which actually means he kicked my a** out the hole.
Have you ever seen an amateur drag racer give any other car a head start? :bs:

It's happened to me several times it seems like I’m always playing catch up.
The GTO is a really fast car and I’ve had no problems with the street competition but I can’t get her to give me a good launch.

I’ll let some of the raceologist have a crack at this one.

Maybe I need some drag racing lessons. <_<

I am most certanly no expert but 1st...do you have an A4 or M6? New grippy shoes would help.

Weight and traction would be my guess.

I'm also wondering how much "torque management" is programmed into our stock pcm. I wonder if a good Program could eliminate this.

I'm no "raceologist" though. :D

Well traction is already an issue, that and the LS1 is a peaky engine, it has nice torque but on other applications (havn't seen GTO dyno) its HP curve is more of a spike than a curve.

Well my $0.02 worth is this...

We have all-seson radial tires (sotck) - Low grip factor, the way I get around this on the street (with my A4) is when I am stopped I torque break to 1500-2000 rpms, Traction control ON - I get no wheel spin or wheel hop. I have come out of redlights as fast as WRXs and other AWD vehicles on numerous occasions. Dry weather of course. I do not race in bad weather. I can probably launch at 2500 but I do not want wheel spin... draws attention that I do not want B)

I have no clue what to tell you if you are driving the M6.

2 things to consider. You want show or do you want go? For show, rev to 4500(or more) and dump the clutch. You will smoke the tires until your rims are on the asphalt. For go, rev to 2500-3000 and and slip the clutch at the same time push the accelerator pedal firmly down but don't smash it. You will find less tire spin and more getting pushed back in the seat. No TC. This is with stock tires and dry road.

Two words: wheel hop (or is that one?)
Common among most all cars w/IRS.
The engine is perfect, the HP curve is almost perfectly linear.

I know the GTO has a different cam, but for one here is the Corvette's power graph.

Its a bit spikey, not a curve.

I beleive you have your interpretations wrong, the graph just proves my point. Linear means that rpm and horsepower climb at the same rate. Considering you can just about put a ruler on the graph and trace the horsepower, that is almost perfectly linear (what you want). It's called a horsepower curve because the graph always curves after peak HP is achieved.

Lol I know what linear means, and yes it is linear, but I dont think its a good thing. One of the reasons I didnt care for the LS1 in the fbody was that I felt it had no low end. This graph proves that while it has good torque, it only makes 200HP at 3000RPM, over 1/2 the powerband, and doesnt make over 300HP untill 4000RPM. I have dynoed my car and while they are two very different animals, the power curve starts off at a higher mark, say (estimating mind you) 200 @ 2K RPM, climbs to 270 @ 5200, and then falls off . Now if I were to graph that it would look muc more like a curve and less like a spike.

For racing purposes linear is exactly what you want. The LS1 was designed with that purpose in mind.
You are correct, however, in stating that it doesn't 'feel' as quick as some cars with spikes along the rpm range. The LT1 is noted for 'feeling' like it had more grunt for this reason, but it does not make the car quicker overall because it falls on its face afterward. There is a big difference between feeling quicker and actually being quicker. In order to be quick, you want linear HP curve.

I agree to that then. :friday:

Read the newagegto forum everyday...over and over again :afro: . Watch car shows, visit howstuffworks.com and ask questions. Some people are afriad to ask question because they might sound dumb, but everyone asks questions at one point, and its the best way to get the exact answere your looking for.

Vesbill,

Thanks for telling me what I didn't know about the m6. How long do (should) I wait until I try my 1st holeshot?

Does anyone know if those #'s stay the same with a stock 05 with the LS2?

I believe so, once your car is broken in I would try a launch.

I launched with an 05 M3, and a modded EVO, we were neck and neck for both races, with the evo slowly pulling ahead on me the whole time, till 80 when I backed off.
