Just a bit of a short story for you guys. I used to own a brown 3.0 Litre Holden VL 1987 year station wagon. It was a straight six (Nissan skyline engine - made for Holden) rated at 111kw.
Just leaving school I got given it to me as my dad got a new car. I ended up taking it to the shop and after spending $1000 NZD ($500 USD at the time) and I did the following:
Added:
2.5inch free flow exhaust (one 12inch resonator)
Kobe extractors
K&N air filter
215 tires
Advanced the timing
Holden sports Srpings (SS) and bushels
and cut out the air intake to be the size of a ice cream container
When the workshop guy brought the car out to me 2 days later, he was grinning and said i gotta show you what I've done to your car on the motorway...you stay here.
He started it up and it gurgled versus how it used to hum. He then pulled away and it sounded like a V8!
Anyways a minute later he was hurtling down the motorway (which was beside his shop) at full speed….it had a beautiful resonate exhaust note again sounding like a V8…you could tell the shifts had got noticeably faster.
Driving home I had a smile the size of Texas as I had improved my pick up and horsepower by at least 15-20%!!!
I had many fun days in that car “extracting” people on the long motorway’s of New Zealand!
What I can say is that Holden do have strong engines and solid bodies (although they lack good handling)
They are great in a straight line!
