: Focus wants to race at the track

So on a lark, I decide to go to the drag strip with my buddy. He's got a TDI Beetle and wants to see how fast it is. (On a 1/8 mile track, he manages to break into the 10's where stock LS1 cars can usually get into the 8's. Not bad for a diesel bug with exhaust and a program.)

For fun, I decide to see what I can do with the GTO.

First run, I blow the 1-2 shift (how the hell I did that, I don't know) but I still managed a 10.55. This guy in a Focus wants to run me but I don't get lined up with him. Second run, I manage a 10.01 with a blown 2-3 shift. I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong but I'm determined to get it right next run. I manage to get next to the Focus but they have one lane shut down so we have to run individually. He runs a 9.7. Fairly impressive for a Focus so I know he's not stock. I finally get a decent run where I don't miss a shift and pull a 9.55. I'm bogging on the launch and wheel hopping through second gear so I know I've got more.

I stop to talk to the Focus guy. Turns out he's running a supercharger on his 4 banger. But after I drop some pressure in the rears and run a 9.45, he tells me he still has no hope of beating me. When I tell him I'm a real novice with drag racing and that I should be able to get the GTO into the high 8's stock, he declines another race.

It was fun but I know I need to learn how to launch this car if I expect to be competitive in drag racing. A 2.3 second 60 foot time just won't cut it. But I did manage to get my reaction time down to 0.85 from a 1.25 so all is not lost.

Just out of curiosity, what were your trap speeds?

I'd have to look at the time slips but I think it was somewhere in the high 70's (once I managed to learn how to shift right...)

I love how people constantly underestimate the go go juice of the gto.

Whoever spends the most goes the fastest usually.
