 I answered my own question. I tried to twist the shift knob off and it came off with a good hard yank. One problem, the shifter has no threads! The shift knob is held in place with a small piece of plastic and some glue. I called Pontiac and they said a replacement would run $285! I already had a Hurst Pistol Grip Shifter from my Trans Am days so I went to my local exhaust shop and they cut the shifter down and welded on a 5/8" thick thread bolt. The Hurst Pistol Grip Shifter looks good and feels much crisper now that I cut about 1" off the lenght of the shaft.
