: Is MAF meter replacement a worthwhile mod?

I was curious and got to thinking. I saw someone was trying to sell a MAF meter and it made me think.

Would replacing the stock unit with an aftermarket unit (on a basically stock GTO) be a worthwhile mod?

I know it flows more air but without a different airbox or TB would you notice ANY gain in HP over the stock MAF?

I thought I'd bring this up here and let the experts sort it out. Your thoughts? :)

The stock MAF is good to over 500 RWHP. The aftermarket units are a waste of time and money, I tried one and it actually slowed the car down. Don't believe the manufacturer's claims.

Thanks for the reply.

I am equally dubious about the aftermarket manufacturers claims about 10 to 12 RWHP out of a MAF swap.

Sounds like it would be money better saved and spent on exhaust or a programmer. :)

A Maf will allow the computer to read more air, so while it may not be effective on a stock GTO, it may help in forced induction/ modified casses.

The modded units actually do not read the airflow better. The theory behind them is to "trick" the PCM into believing there is more/less air being flowed than actual, to make the PCM reduce/add fuel and timing. Another problem, particularly with the Granatelli MAF sensors, is that the PCM uses the MAF parameters in setting line pressures for the auto trans cars and you wind up with lower line pressure than you should have. This can be tuned out, but most tuners will recommend a descreened stock MAF. On an FI car, the MAF setup can be maxed out over 550 RWHP, which is why many high HP FI cars use a standalone unit with a 3 bar MAP for input. I'm just trying to save you guys some hard earned cash so you can get mods that will really give you the best bang for the buck. I have a Granatelli MAF here somewhere, you can borrow it to see for yourself if you want. It's a 85mm unit so you'll need an adapter harness, just let me know. I spent many dollars and hours in trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn't, learn from my mistakes
