: need some friendly dealer advice
snowbred 01-16-2005, 10:47 AM hey guys, newbie here.. im looking in to getting a gto in about 2 months, ill be doing a trade in of my 2004 cavalier w/ 6000 miles.. now my problem is that everytime i go to a pontiac dealership, they take down my number and never call me mainly because im a youngster, and they also want me to pay sticker price <_< . i dont know if this question has been posted before b ut is there some approach i should take to deal with these people? i know theyll try to ripp me a new butt hole with the pricing, so should i just get a loan and make them an offer? since ill be trading in i was looking around at my value and its about 8000k i would still ow 4000 so that would be passed over to my new loan correct? what would be the best offer i could make considering i will be tacked on an extra 4000?
I would probably love to deal with sewell if things dont work out up here (nj) but since im trading in i dont think thatd be possible or is it? without having to drive my car there.
thanks alot
1FASTWRX 01-16-2005, 04:36 PM You should decide on a fair price for you current vehicle. The dealership will simply pay off you current loan. They you will setup a new loan for the GTO.
I like to have a loan already setup with a bank, etc. When I walked into the Subaru dealership to buy my STi I already had a bank draft agreement for
a loan at 4%. That pretty much forced the dealership to match or beat that rate, which they did.
I would also set a price your prepared to buy the GTO for. If the price isn't what you want , walk. You can always come back another day.
I can tell you I'm going to wait it out for awhile. I saved about $6000.00 on my STi buy shopping different dealerships when they first came out.
The GTO is going to be a very slow seller once they initial rush wears off. Believe me its true. A GTO will be a very good deal this time next year.
Orbit Orange 01-16-2005, 05:48 PM Just a reminder. If you owe 4 grand on your Cavalier, you still owe that money. Sure the dealer will work that into your new loan amount, but it does not GO AWAY as if by magic.
So basically if they give you 8K for your Cavalier, they take 4K and pay off your old loan, and then apply the 4K to the downpayment of the GTO. If you were to buy for MSRP around 34K(on a 2005, a 2004 would be significantly less), then you would basically be taking out a 30K loan on an '05. Sit down and figure out if you can swing the payments. I would suggest heading over the GMBuyPower.com and play around with their payment calculators to figure out payments and the like. Now if you will be putting money down the totals will change of course. And getting a 2004 for around 25K would change these numbers too.
Ask yourself how much you can afford per month. Don't forget insurance as it will go up a good amount over that of a Cavalier. You'll be in more for gas per month too as the GTO will not net Cavalier mileage. I'm not trying to discourage you, just being realistic. A 30K loan at reasonable APR will run in the 500 to 600 dollars per month range, I'm guessing.
You say you are young, how young? If your 16-18 you are going to be paying a BIG chunk for insurance. Let us know, and hope this helps. :)
snowbred 01-16-2005, 07:11 PM thanks for the advice, i might end go with a 04 used if i find one a black one with red interior.. i can aford a car up to 40k really but i dont wanna blow all my money on a car, i guess i should have gotten an 04 when they had that huge rebate on them and gotten a pretty sweet deal on it. the payments are not a problem really i make before taxes roughly 3k a month and i really dont have many bills other than my current payments, insurance, phone.. etc and btw im 20 years old. ive been looking around for used gtos but i havent really found many around here, and the ones ive seen what almost as much as a 05 would cost... are the hood scoops avail on an 04 i mean can i go to a dealership and have them do that for me?
Nocturn 01-16-2005, 07:16 PM While I dont think anyone here has yet, I am almost certain that you can, if not you can get one from the aftermarket for approximately the same price.
snowbred 01-16-2005, 07:50 PM alright thanks.. im looking to make a purchase in about 2 months(spring).. i guess ill probably go with a 04 if i find one reasonably priced with black w/ red leather or quicksilver w/ red interior or black int and automatic..

I saw a Red 2004 in a Parking lot here in Glen Burnie, Maryland.....At first I pulled up to it because it had the scoops!!! I said holy smoke a 05! so I went around to the rear to see the BIG exhaust pipes but it was only a 2004
It had the scoops and temp tags which tells me they got a hood somehow. I did not get to talk to the owner.

www.edmunds.com
http://autos.yahoo.com/
Either will give you a base for vehicles. I used to use Edmunds but switched to yahoo because they use Kelly Blue Book for thier vehicle values. Weather that is good or bad I do not know  ??

With the $1500 loyalty rebate all remaining 2004 models were stickered for $24,999.
Sounds like you got a really nice deal....

A smart buy is basically the same thing as a lease, except you hold the title and are listed as the "owner" of he vehicle. It will depend on the laws in your state as to what that does to the other issues with the vehicle. For example, in some states you only pay sales tax on the lease payment, but with a smartbuy, since you are buying the car, you will have to pay tax on the entire vehicle purchase price. Your two options on a smartbuy are to turn the car in at the end of the term, or pay the balloon. There is no protection against the value of the car if you decide to keep it. I also noticed you were in NJ, and you need to be aware if you are seeing smartbuy payments quoted on NY TV stations that there is a special program for smartbuy in NY due to GMAC will not do a lease in that state, so you may not be eligible for those payments. Thtat's part of the fast talk/fine print "residency restrictions apply". Hope this helps.
snowbred 02-10-2005, 10:35 AM no i didnt see it on an ad, but thanks for the heads up. Im just figuring out how to go about getting the car. Ill wait till march and see what kind of incentives there are, since the solstice is supposedly due in march aswell. Thanks
HLDN ON 2005 02-10-2005, 06:35 PM I couldn't get the dealer to let me test drive one. Told me he had to credit check me first. To hell with that. If your tryin to sell a car like this are they not allowed to have a demo car? And no i am not a 19 year old kid. I figured being a 28 year old male gave me some benefit of the doubt when it comes to testing a new car. It's not like I wanted to beat on the car. I wanted to test it, and make a decision if I was ready to buy one right there (2004) or wait for the 2005.
snowbred 02-10-2005, 08:25 PM heres another question for you guys, could you still have the option of having a co signer on a smart buy? Only reason i ask is for a lower interest rate.
Yes you can have a co-signer on a Smartbuy.
snowbred 02-11-2005, 10:15 AM great..thx
snowbred 02-14-2005, 08:45 AM going to see if i can pick pu a yj A4 today if i get a good deal with tax and everything included, they also have some dealership cash where im going. wish me luck
snowbred 02-14-2005, 07:39 PM didnt get the car.. they wanted 34295 but they gave me a 3052 check so that made the price hover about 31k..they would only give me 6k for my cavalier and i still owed 12k so that was 6k added on to my purchse which sucks.
my only hope is to see if i can get a new 04 for a decent price with my trade
snowbred 02-15-2005, 12:02 AM zo6j.. is there anyway to deal with your dealership and still do a trade even though you guys are half way around the country?
