What takes place if you hit the Rev. Limiter?
Any fatal damage? :frankie:

The rev limiter will cut the fuel/air to the engine forcing it to lower the rpm. Nothing fatal will happen, just don't hold the engine at the redline doing a burnout or something. You will know when you hit it as it makes a peculiar sound.

Not so fast, it all depends on how you hit the rev limiter. You are correct assuming you hit it under accel, however if you are downshifting from 4th to 1st at 100mph and hit the limiter, it will not stop the engine from overreving and it would be possible to have some major internal engine damage. Not that anyone would be dumb enough to do that, just covering all the bases.

Thanks for the help guys,
I have tapped the Rev. limiter.
Missing a shift or late shift not paying attention.
I did'nt hit it bad just enough for me to know I did.
And was wondering if I hurt my baby.

Thanks for the info.
as usual great place to find answers.

I saw quite a few LS1 Camaros getting dynoed at he camarofest, they were reved to the limiter and there were 2 loud bangs each time one hit. I thought it was due to the timing being retarded?

Sorry fellas for bringing up such an old post, but I just bought a 05 GTO last week and, yesterday I took it down one of the appartment streets close to UNCW with a friend and decided to let it loose. I turned off T/C and let r go. I am new to a stick as my previous car was a 02 ws6 T/A auto, which was alot louder. I wasnt paying attention to the tach, but when I looked down I was already close to 7000 rpm so I quickly shifted, but it still might have gone a little higher. Anyway I didnt notice any rev limiter and my heart fell when I noticed I red lined it. Now I am paranoid about every little thing in my car. the engine sounds about the same as my LS1 did and there is no smoke or strange noise comming from the exhaust. sometimes I hear a strange noise comming from under the central console area below the shifer at all speeds. There is no power loss either. and when I did it the car seemed unaffected. Should I have anything to worry about? I figured the rev limiter would have kicked in. Maybe it did and I didnt notice, or my eyes were playin tricks on me. But I know for sure It didnt make an alarm sound or anything. Thanks for any help.

There isn't really an alarm...just the fuel and air gets cut so your not feeding the engine for additional RPMs. The it should have sounds strange, like your roaring along and then it gets quiet...and you would feel it like you start decelerating instead of the kick in your pants. Hit mine by accident once...thought I'd lost the engine at redline, but it comes back as soon as you are below redline.

Don't worry about it! I'd suggest trying not to make a habit out of hitting the rev limiter. It's there to protect your motor when the driver isn't watching the tach close enough. I've nailed mine more than a few times but am learning the car better & have not hit it for awhile. Have fun.....
