: Whistling sound from engine? - 05 GTO

My mom and dad mentioned to me that my engine was making a whistling sound. So I got out and listened to it. It is pretty noticeable. Its a high pitched whistle like sound coming from somewhere under the hood (belts, intake, ??)

The sound is there all the time, not just when starting the car up. Its just a constant whistle sound. Is this normal on a LS2 motor?

Check the alternator. Some people here had the same sound on their '04s.

Make sure that the tube from the filter box to the intake tube isn’t loose. That could be the cause of a vacuum leak…

Thanks guys, I will check those things out. I don't think its anything serious. It does sound like a sucking/whistling sound. Its not loud but its constant.

Sure its not just the engine sucking in air?

I have the same whistling sound from my 05 as well. As far as I can tell it is just the air being sucked into the air box.

Yes, thats what it sounds like. It sounds like air being sucked into a small opening to make a slight whistle like sound. You can make the same sound with your mouth by sucking in air. Kind of like if you were breathing through a straw.

If it is sucking air from the air box you could leave it for now. But make sure it is not sucking air from the MAF back toward the intake. That unmetered air will mess with the computer and reduce power.

Update

Over in another forum I was notified of a TBS (Technical Service Bulletin)
for LS1's and LS6's
Whistle from intake/throttle body most noticable between 1k-2k rmps. If the customer complains of this problem they are to replace the intake.

So I'm going to be calling a Pontiac dealership on Monday to check this out.

That TSB does not apply to GTOs, they changed the intake design since then. If it's any consolation, my '01 C5 had that whistle and ran mid 11s on a stock internals engine with bolt-ons....

I took my car into the shop because of a check engine light ( which was nothing)
I mentioned the whistle to the service manager (which he heard very noticably). After checking everything he said he wasn't sure were it was coming from. Then he checked the computer to see if anyone else had complained of this noise. No one else had complained of this noise.

He went and got the keys to a Blue 05 GTO on the showroom floor. We started it up and It made the same exact sound. A very noticably whistle at idle.

So he said he would keep me posted if he hears anything from corporate about the whistle. But as for now its considered normal for an 05.

I got my Speed Induction on correctly after I left the track...I got it on sale at Tbyrne - It is a fairly good unit and it is not expensive.

Has anyone received any additional info on the whistling sound. My husband and myself noticed it. Car just hit 500 miles. We drove a couple of them before purchasing this one off the showroom floor without driving it. Dont remember hearing it in the others. But the only time it is really noticeable is when you first crank it up in the garage after it has been sitting over night.

Alt. whine ~ putting charge on batt. after draw from from starter motor & parasitic drain , usually goes away after batt. is fully charged . My 05 makes this noise , but I would call it a whine not a whistle ? ~~ Comments ?

Mine goes away when I close the hood and roll my windows up. :)

I recently installed my LPE CAI and the whistling is more noticeable. From what I can tell it’s the air passing through the throttle body at partial throttle. There must be just the right angle of flow to make the whistle when it is open just part way.

Same goes for me, mine has 641 miles on it its an 06 6MT. It whistles really loud at startup, than after about 15 seconds it goes away.

My car does the same thing at start up when it was stock and now. GM says it's just the intake sucking in air and I agree. Nothing to worry about IMO.
