: Ram Air
dapper24 03-09-2005, 12:39 PM Does anyone know about adding Ram Air to the 2005 GTO? Can it be done, are there kits available for purchase, etc?
I think a working Ram Air unit would be really cool.
Zero4 03-09-2005, 12:52 PM there is a kit for the 04 that comes with a cone filter and a hood
but Nocturn will tell you that ram air does nothing
you could do other mods that will give you more hp for less cash

Lol  Appearantly I have made a few post on the subject.
I wont go into the details but as Zero said your money is better spent elsewhere, the stock hood on the 05 has baffles in the back that are easily removed, which will work to cool the engine bay temperature, but going beyond that isn't worth the trouble IMO.
TheJizzer 03-09-2005, 09:03 PM And I will Recapitulate on Nocturn as usual :P
Although RamAir may not be "proven" and there are better "bang for the buck"
Just like a CAI -- giving 10-20HP (depending who you talk to)....a CAI being correctly fed by the hood air will work great! -- Just like a cowl intake it takes the coldest air possible and forces it into the intake....and for what it is worth, that HAS to help the HP -- mostly at high speeds though - the higher the speed the better the "ram air".....
But ALso that is why I prefer a Hood with ramair and heat extractors.... the heat extractors pull HOT air out of the engine and ramair pushes COOL (like fonzy) air in...
It may not be the best bang for the buck -- but it works and it LOOKS GOOD!
:afro: Unlike this :)
npowell 03-09-2005, 11:03 PM I'm thinking that it always comes back to the bang for the buck. Unless you are trying for the fastest car with cost being no object. And if cost were no object, no offense, but I can't imagine that many of us would start with an '04 or '05 GTO.
Nocturn 03-09-2005, 11:21 PM Cooler air to the intake will give gains, ram air does provide cooler air to the intake, but ram air does NOT push air down the intake manifold and provide a forced induction effect at all. Cooler air yes, Pushing air into the engine, no.
Zero4 03-09-2005, 11:27 PM you would think that in the summer time the hood would get hot and heat the air going into the engine

In a sence, but its all relative. If the hood is hot imagine engine bay temps where the heat from the engine is stored up with no place to go....

I am designing a ram air intake for my '05/m6. I am creating a prototype right now. The air box for it will be in front of the engine, mating to the stock hood on the '05. B)

I have got to mark this day on the calendar ...
Nocturn, I think this is the first time I have agreed with you 100%.
I guess your alright afterall! ;)

Zero4 03-10-2005, 11:29 AM I think the ram air would work better if the inlet was in the lower grill not on the hood

The "Ram Air" theory has been tested and no, it does not create positive pressure in the intake manifold. On my C5, it did reduce the negative pressure in the intake(evidenced by MAP readings) with a properly designed intake system(Vararam). I picked up 3 tenths and 3 MPH after switching from a competitior's system, so the reduction in negative pressure did make a difference. There's nothing I see out for the GTO that I think will work, if it's for track use just remove the left headlight and you're on par with or better than any of the cold air systems on the market now for GTOs.
