: Double Clutching?

I learned how to drive on a stick, but I've never owned one. ( Till later this month hopefully, dad's looking at an 05 Black/Black M6 for me)

Anyway, what exactly is double clutching? I have no clue.

Basicly it's a way to smoothly shift a crash or dog mesh gearbox. when upshifting you depress the clutch select neutral - release the clutch whait for the engine revs to die to the next gear syncro speed - depress the clutch and select the next gear and release the clutch.

To double down shift depress the clutch select neutral release the clutch throttle up the engine to the lower gear syncro speed depress the clutch and enguage the lower gear and release the clutch again.

With a full syncro box mistiming a double clutch shift doesn't matter a bit it will still perform the shift as if you did a single clutch shift. On the other hand if youre a truck driver driving an 18 speed roadranger box if you mistime a shift by more than 30% of syncro range not only will you not get the next geat but you may have to stop the truck and start all over again.

hope this helps :type:

So in terms of a GTO, its completely useless and unnecesary.

In terms of any newer car......

There's a short write up in the April Sport Compact too......

Completely useless?

I'd go with not really worth the extra effort for most people most of the time.

It will save wear on your synchros, which will most likely be the first thing to go on a manual.

Of course, once the synchros go, double clutching will solve the problem. But once the synchros are gone you'll have to synchronize it perfectly to get them to go in. On the other hand, even a little bit of synchronization via double clutching will prolong the life of the synchros.

I've never done it on upshifts. And I don't do it that much on downshifts, but if I'm cruising along, want to downshift, and have the time, I will generally double clutch it to save a little wear on the synchro.

Then there's heel-toe-downshifting for which there obvious reasons.
