Get and use only AC-Delco Ultraguard Gold Oil Filter, use UPF-44. Not PF-44 but UPF-44, the best money can buy.

Sorry about the caps lock , comes from not admitting i need to wear my reading glasses. I installed the pf 46 as stated in book . I drove 100 miles after, all seems ok wish i had an oil meter instead of all the trip junk.

Use the Mobil 1 filter instead of the PF46 with Mobil 1 oil and you can never go wrong! The filters are so much better (just hold each of them in your hands and see which one weighs alot more) and with the reduction in filtering size on modern LS2 engines, the bucks spent on a good filter could save your engine!

While that is true, I don't think weight alone is a sure fire way to tell if a filter is good or not.

So which Mobil filter model do you buy?

As an ex-service manager, I'd be a lot happier to see a record of short interval oil changes than a list of gourmet filters. :)

Wingnut,
I make a livingselling GM parts. The PF44 was replpaced by the PF46. You may still find PF44's, but all I carry (& sell) are PF46's. Being an obsolete filter (44), you may find a "deal" on them. I don't know what the difference is, but usually a replacemant means a re-design, hopefully for the best.
Hope that helps.

Right... the PF44 was replaced with the PF46.

On another thought... my dealer wanted to replace the PF46 with either a PF61, PF59, or PF58 which he said would provide more oil, filter surface, and cooling. They do fit under the gaurd. SR22xs, does any of this make sense to you? Is there anything to be gained?

I had a '97 Monte Carlo with the 3.1 in it. It called for a 47. Where I worked at the time, they convinced me to use the 52 (i think it was the 52), which is almost twice as long as the 47, so it will naturally do a better job. Where I work now, I suggested that to them, but they wanted no part of that. They only put on what the book calls for. I had well over 150k, and never had any probs. I always change mine every 3000. I never trusted the "oil life system". I think it's a very inexpensive mantainence, and for me, piece of mind.

Howsomever....
I can tell you that they are using the PF46 on everything from Z71's to Denali's (also using a variation of the 6.0 litre), and you've got many owners now that trust
the oil life system, and don't change their oil until that light comes on. Up to 5-6k miles.

I haven't cut any filters in half, to see if there is any difference inside (YET!)
I won't wait for the "light" to come on. So, for now, I'll stick with the 46. I'd hate that the 46 has a special flow or valve, and find out the wrong way.

I do agree with the ex-service manager! The best thing you can do for any engine is to change the oil often AND use a quality filter. Mobil and K&N both have top-of-the-line filtration, which is especially important on a high performance engine with such a small oil filter. I never go over 3,500 miles, even with synthetic, and I've never had to walk home because of a broken engine!

From AC Delco:
Thank you for writing ACDelco.

We appreciate your e-mail Mr. Strobel regarding the PF44 and PF46 Oil
Filters. Both of these Filters have an Anti-drainback Valve. The PF44,
which is has been superseded by the PF46, has a micron rating of 20 to 30
microns. The PF46 has a 10 micron rating.

More specific information about the manufacturing of these Filters is not
available; however, be assured that they both work well in the applications
they are recommended for.

The new filter is a lot better for the same money.
