The '05 GTO had it's first race this weekend. Here's the story:
My brother comes in from out of town for the Easter Holiday, of course he wants to take the GTO out and have a little fun, sounds good!
So we decide to head into the city (Motor City) where cop hassles are less of a problem. We head to a popular cruising area and all is good, beautiful day in a great car. After a little while he asks if he can take the helm, of course I let him take over. So we're driving around taking it easy, then after only a few minutes I see a 2006 Corvette, all black tinted windows. As soon as I spot the Vette I know this guy is going to want to run. Sure enough about 15 seconds after we pass the guy he's flying up behind us. I turn to my brother and say there is no way you're going to race this guy. The obvious reason is that he'd only driven the car for a few minutes, and more secretly I don't want my new GTO getting blown out in it's first run. So the Vette is egging us on, revving his engine, and being generally obnoxious. After about 30 seconds I lean over and give the go ahead, my brother didn't wait a nanosecond. He revs it up a little and drops the clutch into second, the only thing you can do if you're doing 18mph. He hit is just right, smoking the tires just enough to kick in the HP and Torque. We take off like a rocket, but I'm still expecting the new Vette to run us down like dogs, but he doesn't. I look back and he's still not gaining ground on us. Elated I look over at my bro and say "keep it down, you're waxing his a#$ dude!" (Cut me some slack I was surprised). My bro keeps the pedal down until about half way through 3rd, then and only then does the Vette start gaining ground. I was absolutely stunned and Vette wasn't happy :(.
I felt a little bad about the first run, after all we did get a head start - mind you the Vette kept losing ground until we let off the gas, but fair is fair, he'd earned one more shot. So I take over and find the Vette, he's still obnoxious, though definitely tamed a bit from the first run. I'm next to him goating him on (manual is great for this!). I'm trying to get him to go first for a couple reasons, one because we had a head start the first time, and also because now winning isn't enough, I wanted to run him down, but he won't go even though he can see my waving him on. Finally I say fine, give a signal and hit it in first going about 5mph. Once again the Vette was thoroughly dusted, losing a little ground up to about 70mph where I let off. He spead off the island at about 110 MPH, not too cool considering there were others there, must have been pissed.
You're probably thinking no way, just like I did before the race, but this did happen, the Vette did gun it all the way, no question, and he did consistently lost ground at least through 70mph. I'm still shocked, but very happy :)
P.S. Vette appeared to be auto, but I don't know for sure.
