I let my cousin drive my car this weekend and after awhile he decide's he wants to feel the power, so He takes off from a roll, he doesn't redline it but turns it about 5000 or alittle more, He shifts 1st thru 3rd fine (not abusing it just shifting) and then dumbass goes from 3rd back 2nd. And now from about 30 on there is a whine coming from rear end. What could retard have done? Am I doomed? 1000's in damage?

sounds like a mechanical overrev, This isn't common, but its been done before so don't feel to bad.

If everything still runs fine then there isnt any real damage, but depending on the milliage he could have inproperlly broken in the rear end, which could be causing the whine. You might get it fixed at a dealer, but they may not.

I dont think there is any permanent damage, but the whine may annoy you to no end....either way your still doomed

Actually to be serious...What I would do is check out the differential fluid, see if ya find anything there.

Next I would take it to a shop and see if they can find anything.

It may be the pinion gear may have come loose. Not enough to cause damage right away. Take a look under the diff and look for fluid leaking. It could burn the gears and cause them to wear prematurely. Basically, the rear end gears are not aligned right and that causes the whinning noise.

1000s in damage???? Maybe in the millions!!!!!! :D LOL...

Actually, if the dealer dosn't do it for you (and they should, if they want to keep a customer loyal, just let them know you were driving one day and accidently put it into 2nd instead of 4th) you should be able to find a compitant mechanic do it for 4-500 bucks.....

Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out......

This was posted by someone on the another GTO forum. According to him he used the dealers computer to pull up this service bulletin.

I hope this helps, out. I am having the same issue (rear end whine) with my 04 M6 GTO when cruising between the speeds of 45-65 mph.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Any concern with the rear axle in the 2004-2005 Pontiac GTO.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Dana Axle has provided 20 rear Axles for the 2004/2005 GTOs. They would like them exchanged for major failed units and axle whine for engineering analysis.

Currently, this stock of axles has been depleted but more feedback from the field is desired. If an axle is required for one of these vehicles, please contact the PQC at 1-800-654-7654 so that you can be placed on the list for shipment when an axle becomes available.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Sorry to hear about your damage. In foresight, my rule of thumb is “nobody drives my $33.55 investment but me!” If I break it, it’s my fault. Now you must ask yourself the question, “Is blood thicker then a GTO”. Kick his @$$

I doubt it was his friend that caused damage to the car, this appears to be a known issue. The dealer will probably cover the problem under warranty.

Hey 1bdgoat, I had the rear end replaced in mine a month ago at COGIN. By shat I was told was that either the ring gear or pinion gear was bad. They replaced and then dad to replace the hubs on boath sides because they squashed.
