Im having my car inspected on tuesday morning and my dad wants them to service it while its there.. i told him i wanted to do the oil change this way i could get a K&N filter and just have the pleasure of doing it.. now for the question.. Will this void the warranty if i change the oil myself? what do they do when you take it in for service do they just change the oil or do they check/change some other things? if so are these things able to be done by oneself. Thanks in advance.. also if anyone hsa an opinion on the K&N oil filter please jump in

No it wont void your warrenty, and yes you can do everything yourself. but DO NOT use a K&N oil filter, they are horrible filters that do a POOR job of filtering. Use an AC Delco, they are good quality filters that will filter your oil, the K&N attempts to but doesnt do an adequate job.

Stick with an AC Delco, and you wont be sorry.

I'll not intrude on the filter controversy, but I will say that GM will never disallow warranty repair just because you do your own oil changes. It would be prudent to keep a log (in the back of your owners manual) of dates and mileage, and maybe even receipts for the purchase of the oil, although they wouldn't go that far to find a reason not to fix it.

I saw some oil filters cut away some years ago when GM was pushing their Goodwrench oil, and I will say that I use AC Delco filters after seeing some of the cheapo competition. Doesn't mean others aren't good, but if you use Delco, there is no question if you need warranty work. Use an "off-brand" and you may find some resistance.

Ok so i went and bought the filter and gave my goat an oil change everything went very well except when i underestimated how far the oil would shoot.. long story short in the second that the oil bin wasnt under the drain plug it splooged all over the concrete ahah eh wasnt that bad for my first time got most of the oil out fresh oil in my goat any thing i should do after the change ie: running the engine for a while etc?

I can't get a copy of the service manual, but cast on the bottom of the oil pan is some message about "See manual for drain procedure". I went to the local Pontiac dealer who has an online manual and they said they couldn't find anything in there about oil drain procedure.

SO.... I would do a normal drain and refill. Since the filter is mounted vertically, I would also fill that new filter with oil to prime it before screwing it on.

Yeah, and don't let the skid plate knock out your teeth under there.....

Don't forget to reset your oil timer. If I remember right you turn the ignition switch to run( don't start the car) and depress the gas pedal half way 2-3 times and then shut the car off. The only way you will know if it works is if the service oil message dosn't come on in 1-2k.depending when you did your oil change. ;)
