In gear, under load, keep it below the redline. There is little to be gained from over-revving the engine because you run over the top of the power curve hill and are better off upshifting to get back that sweet torque peak. You may have noticed by now that 4th gear (on the M6) will take you over 100 mph easily and quickly. Take a quick look at the powerband charts and plan your shifts based on either RPM or speed so you use the most effective part of the power curve.

Revving out of gear is a waste of fuel and could cause damage to valve train because it is so easy to exceed the RPM limit with no load. If you keep it below redline and don't mind the extra wear on the parts and waste of fuel, enjoy. I can't seem to get a Helms manual so I don't know if there is a computer imposed RPM limiter built into the computer or not.

i have an a4 .. say you rev it in neutral or park does that beat up your engine badly?

See paragraph 2 above.

Why would you want to cause excessive engine wear? As long as you keep it below the redline, you won't "hurt" it, but flirt with that very often and you'll someday cross over the line. Then it depends on how conservative the GM engineers were at setting that number.

Technically, no, its just the engine spinning in Nutual, just don't do any rev it in nutrual and then drop it into drive, that can seriouslly hurt your transmission.

I agree with mldavis. There is a distinct possibility that you could bend a push rod or float the valves from over-reving.

 Where is this powerband charts? Could that be a reason why I feel my goat jerk when I shift to 5th with my RPM's below 3K? :(
