: whining sound?

I notice on my car that starting about 50 mph there is a low whine that increases with engine speed until about 65ish or so. After the throttle is let off, it goes away. Is this normal? I believe it is coming from the transmission.

Hey PhantomGTO,
I saw this on anther forum. I guess you got more activity there. Anyway, Here are my thoughts on this.

Anyway, whining from an A/T could very well be a differential issue. It may be something as simple as low fluid in the rear end or something as bad as the rearend gears not meshing due to improper yoke install. If the sound goes away at coasting, I am thinking it is the latter of the two. Either way, it would be best to have the dealer look at it. The tranny itself wouldn’t be making the noise, but the noise from the rearend will travel.

I just purchased a 2004 M6 a week ago and it seems to have the same issue. When running at speeds of 50mph or more the car produces a very subtle "drone" or "whine".
If I let my foot off the gas it immediatly goes away.
The sound comes back as soon as I apply power again.
The sound seems to be comming from the rear of the vehical, but I cannot be sure.

I plan on checking the fluid level on the differential, but if that looks good I plan on taking it to my friend/mechanic or the dealer.

I will follow up once I have something more solid, please do the same.

That is exactly what is happening with mine. Whenever I get a chance to take it to the dealer, I will let you all know what they say.

Mine does the same thing - M6 - whining fairly badly at 50ish - then gone. Going to the dealer today.

That sound is coming from the differential. It is MY opinion that the mass of "problems" that people have had with the diffs in these cars are mostly false....mainly because most people are not accustomed to driving a rwd car that has IRS. An IRS rwd vehicle has its differential mounted in a completely different manner from a live axle rwd car....which in turn causes NORMAL noises that a differential generates to be transmitted to the body of the car in a much different manner. I would say what you're hearing is probably a normal sound and I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues to get worse or changes pitch. Just my 2 cents.

With the Kooks LT's installed and the mufflers gone, can't hear the whining anymore.

GM has a TSB for differential whine. It is NOT normal for a 3rd member to make any such noisie if it is setup correctly. Take your car to the dealer and ask them to look up the TSB. Dana is doing direct replacments for this issue.

how do you check your fluid levels on your differential?

how do you check your fluid levels on your differential?

Open the fill plug (I seem to remember a 30 mm socket is required for this). The fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill hole...or just coming out. As you can tell, there is not much to it. I believe the real trick is to get under the car while it is level. I guess I could get it up on 4 jackstands...if I had 4 jackstands.
