Has anyone tried applying the parking break at speeds greater then 5mph? I’ve tried this with other cars thru out the years and had some easy smooth breaking. When I tried this with the GTO ( shutter/Bang!) its like the parking breaks are loose in the hub but when at a complete stop the parking breaks work great. (By the way, don’t ask why I do this, there are several reasons)

The parking brake on the GTO is a parking brake, not an emergency brake. On many 4 wheel disc braking systems, it is necessary to attach a small drum to the rotor and mount some very small shoes inside that small drum to enable a simple cable application strong enough to hold the car on hills when parked.

Using the parking brake during driving is not good. It is not vented or finned, and there is no practical way of dissapating heat. I have not seen the shoes used, but judging from the size of the little drum it wouldn't be of much use in braking anyway (sure wish my Helm manual would get printed!)

mldavis,
Thanks for the post, you are correct about the size. I should have figured that one out....

Here is your park brake its only a single band and because of that it is very agressive in its application but holds well
