I followed the reset instructions on page 5-17 of the owner's manual repeatedly without result. Has anyone else had this problem?
Engine Oil Life System Won't Resetkjohnst 08-21-2005, 08:53 PM I followed the reset instructions on page 5-17 of the owner's manual repeatedly without result. Has anyone else had this problem? torridredaccd 08-22-2005, 02:08 PM Ive been having that problem on my 04. Its in the shop right now, Ill tell what I find out. Did you put something other than 5w30 in it? kjohnst 08-22-2005, 03:33 PM Anybody who is not using only GM Part No. 4718M has not been reading the owner's manual that is perfectly clear on this point. Has anyone else noticed that the GM part number for the oil only shows on the Mobil 1 that is 5W-30 and none of the other Mobil 1's? My comment on filters: Amost no consumer can evaluate the quality of the filter paper inside. No need to ponder. Just use the filter recommended by the car maker; i.e., ACDelco PF46 for the 2005. Not ALL Mobil 5W-30 is 4718M rated. READ THE LABEL before buying the oil, and don't trust a quick lube joint to put the right stuff in it unless you bring your own. Also, make sure (if you do) that they know it takes 6-1/2 quarts, not 4 or 5. kjohnst 08-28-2005, 04:41 PM Okay, I went to the dealer with my Engine Oil Life System Won't Reset complaint. The guy who was doing the valet parking (maybe he changes oil too) reset it and had me on my way in one minute. This is what he said. "Yeah, several GM models are really cranky about this." "Where is your display? Here? (radio) Or here? (dash)" "Forget 'slow'. You gotta be sure to go fast, hit the pedal three times and turn it off before 5 seconds is up." (Three times?) Conclusion: Go fast, and if two pedals don't work, do three. thunderdan 09-08-2005, 06:19 PM this is the first "new" car i've owned and I noticed that after 13000 miles that my oil change light hasn't come on yet,(i've changed it three times). I know that the computer guages driving habitsand engine speed, temperature, and other data, but it's not gone on yet...I drive my car relatively easy, but 13000 miles? anyone else? mldavis 09-08-2005, 06:56 PM  CHANGE IT!! Forget the @#$! light. The next light you see will be the oil light or check engine light. I have no idea how the computer figures out when to change oil other than some vague references to trip length, engine RPMs, etc. But whatever it does, it's not as smart as you are. CHANGE IT !! :woot: thunderdan 09-09-2005, 08:03 PM hold on there, mldavis. I believe you missunderstood me. I have changed the OIL three times already, not the reset procedure...just making sure :D ...we are all good, right? ;) :afro: mldavis 09-09-2005, 08:12 PM Misunderstood you. Heck, I was worried about the CAR, not your feelings. :D carnivore80 09-12-2005, 09:11 AM I had a problem resetting the change oil light too and it was actually my frustration that got it to work. I tried the "slowly pressing the gas pedal twice within 5 seconds" thing without luck, thinking that maybe I had the starter in the wrong position or something. But then when I tried unsuccessfully like 15 times to get it to work, I got frustrated and just started quickly tapping the gas like it was a kick drum and bingo! No more oil light. You just have to kinda play with it, I guess. ;) Gatling553 09-12-2005, 02:54 PM S.O.B! Yup 3 times fast and it worked like a charm. I’m telling you, these threads have saved me so much heartache!!! Thanks  torridredaccd 09-12-2005, 03:01 PM I wish it had been that simple on my car. The light kept coming on no matter who did and as it turned out my oil pump was failing. <_< thunderdan 09-12-2005, 05:49 PM imagine that.a couple of days after i post, my light came on 13,190 miles to be exact....way to go pontiac  ...this is what the manufacturer engineered, imagine how tight a ship the dealer runs  ...this is why i change my oil and maintain my car myself. Oh, and thank you guys here for posting helpful info to the rest of us here :afro: | |
