Most likely a stupid question here: Do the new GTOs require premium gas, or is regular fine?

While Regular 87 will work in all but the highest of the high combustion engines, you want premium for an LS-2 becuase you wouldnt be feeding a championship dog alpo would you?

But it's not a 'gotta have it or else' thing?

..... No it does not "need" premium but to make the stated 400 horses you "need" premium, its all in the owners manual someplace.

Rumor has it that in Maryland it will hit $4-$6 by the weekend end. People are lined up down the road with 55 gallon drums loading them up and a few stations are out of gas!

If I had one, it would be nothing but premium for me. No matter how high it gets, the 20 cent difference ain't enough to risk any long-term ill effects on the car. Besides, wouldn't the premium fuel get slightly better gas mileage anyway with a car that is supposed to require it?

Good point croft. Obviously gas is high, but really, you're only going to save a few bucks by filling up with a lesser grade. I'm not sure if the lesser octane affects fuel mileage, but to me it's just not worth the little money saved.

I'm starting to get low in the GTO and I'm going to really have a hard time finding gas in Baton Rouge.

you're only going to save a few bucks by filling up with a lesser grade.

Let me expand on that. I'm glad the stations haven't figured this out yet.

Here the 92 octane is only 10 cents more per gallon than the 87 octane. When the gas price was down around a buck a gallon, 10 cents a gallon seemed quite "pricey" 10 cents of 1 dollar is 10%. So premium was 10% more expensive. Well now at 3 bucks plus, 10 cents of $3.50 is less than 3%. So premium is ONLY 3% more expensive. Premium now is actually a better "bargain" for the price than it was years ago. I am just hoping and praying that these idiot suppliers don't figure this out and start pricing premium at 30, 40 or 50 cents more per gallon. Then it is not that much of a "bargain". I know most places the premium is 15 to 20 cents higher per gallon which is still OK. Just a thought. :)

Yeah thanks orbit & mike, that's exactly what I was getting at.. at this point and time if you go strictly by the percentages, premium fuel is actually a better deal than it's probabaly ever been.. while gas prices have soared, the actual difference in price you pay between regular and premium is still pretty much the same as it's always been. In other words, keep your ride happy ;)
