: TIRE WEAR
bud o 09-07-2005, 11:47 AM MY ISSUE IS TIRE WEAR....MY STOCK TIRES HAVE BEEN ROTATED THREE TIMES IN 18,500 MI...WITH STRICT ATTENTION TO TIRE PRESSURE. I AM EXPERIENCING CUPPING ON ALL FOUR TIRES ON THE INSIDE, AND AM TOLD THEY ARE DUE FOR REPLACEMENT. HAS ANYONE SWITCHED TO THE PILOT EXALTO A/S BY MICHELIN? I AM DOWN TO BETWEEN 3 AND 7/32'S ALL AROUND.
milehiGTO 09-07-2005, 09:53 PM I am a little surprised by the cuping. It's normal to see more wear on the inside of the tires as the IRS has good bit of negative camber dialed in. Helps with the handling. :D
You might want to check your shocks and struts to see if any of them are leaking fluid just to be safe. It wouldn't be the first time I have see a strut or shock from the factory fail so soon.
If your due for tires be sure to have someone check the aligment. Bad wheel alignment can eat tires fast. That could also be the reason for the cupping.
just my .02 :type:
JBullGator 11-13-2005, 08:15 PM I have 31,000 miles on my 04 and working on the second set of tires. Part of the Dealer incentive was free tires for as long as I own the car.
Funny thing happened when I took delivery of my GTO. They never put it on the rack to check the under side. I put over six thousand miles on it with three re-visits to the dealer complaining about the extra stiff ride. They couldnt find any thing wrong. By now my tires are wearing all kinds of crazy ways. They even tried to align the front end to no avail.
It developed a radical vibration @ 45mph which remained @ speeds up to 70. I was seeing red when I puled into the service center. A mechanic test drove it and put it on the rack. If I had not been standing there watching I would not have belived what he found. 4 bright orange shipping blocks still installed on my suspension system.
They still have a hard time getting the alignment perfect but the ride is much better.
FROROCKS 11-13-2005, 09:24 PM Yea, the first two things they are to check for when come off the ship are the shipping blocks and the over inflated air pressure in the tires.
thunderdan 11-14-2005, 04:14 PM michelin pilot a/s tires are terrific tires with ride, handlin and wet traction better than kdws tires, but I would recommend the newest michelin pilot ps2 tires which are softer(220 treadwear vs. 400 for the pilot sport a/s) but quiter, smoother, grip better and out shine the pilot sport a/s in about every catagory with the exception of treadlife and snow. the are also not going to cup out on that car. check out the michelin website too.

I replaced my with TOYO's @22,000. I am much happier
stevek427 03-07-2006, 12:30 PM Hello All,
New to this site, but was wondering about the shipping blocks. Just picked up a new '05 last weekend, and the ride seems a bit excessive. I took a look underneath, but didn't see anything unusual. Seems like this problem is somewhat common at least. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

Check the tire preassure?
stevek427 03-07-2006, 01:32 PM I just hopped in and drove it back from Wisconsin to Michigan, and put it in the garage. I haven't checked the tire pressure yet.
gto n 442 03-07-2006, 07:25 PM any tire will fair better than the stock tires do. especially if you run 18"s. I got stock 18s and the potenzas are some of the lowest rated in customer satisfaction on tirerack.com (bottom of the list.
Anyone have any idea about the max tire width you could throw on a stock rim?im wondering if going to a 255 in the rear is realistic? I know theres not much clearance on the front at all. in fact the tires that are stock for 18" wheels are 10 mm more narrow than the 17s because of this.
thunderdan 09-20-2006, 01:31 AM I rotated my tires every 5,000 miles or so and would up getting 38,000 miles on them (KDWS-BFG) and found the Bridgestone potenza re050a for $92/tire from a well known tire retailer online(biggest one out there) and has them installed and ride-matched. I admit I had some fun with the old tires occasionally and, living in Texas, drove them longer than people up north would of, but, every one of the old tires had inside wear and the alignment checked out fine, many high end German sport sedans do the same thing. The new tires have a treadwear rating of 140-very soft and it is like a brand new car---truely awesome and much quieter, smoother and stickier than the BFGs ever were. If I didn't find the deal I did I would have gone with the PS2 Michelins too, maybe next time=).
vrbleena 09-20-2006, 01:39 AM Part of the Dealer incentive was free tires for as long as I own the car.
Oh man, would I send them bankrupt hehehe :p
Do they allow for "sustained and deliberate loss of traction"? LOL
asktk 09-20-2006, 01:04 PM Looking at Kumho Ecsta ASX tires - to replace my standard 17" rims. Need something AS for snow because I live in PA. Anyone heard of these?
thunderdan 09-25-2006, 01:34 AM yes, for the money they are some of the longest wearing, even-est wearing, z rated tires out there. They are also very quiet and good in rain and slush. Keep in mind however, with a treadwear rating of 420 they sacrifice some ultimate grip in favor of more treadlife IMO. Good purchase--- many happy users with that tire.
Wretched 6.0 09-25-2006, 05:47 AM Keep in mind, treadwear ratings are very deceptive.
you can have a goodyear with a rating of 400, and a kumho with a 400, and have the kumho wear out 2-3 times as fast.
You can only use that rating to compare tires from the same manufacturer. So you can compare Bridgestone to Bridgestone, and Goodyear to Goodyear, but that's it.
Sounds stupid but that is how the government agreed to do this in the 70's
asktk 09-26-2006, 01:19 PM yeah - know I'm giving up some traction for the AS capabilities. General plan is to throw the KUMHO's on stock 17 rims to get through winter, then get some summer tires on custom rims - 18's for fair weather play. I don't usually drive my GTO in snowy weather - instead driving my Inifinity QX56 - but my 2 1/2 year old twins started pre-school 2 days a week, so there's a chance the wife will need the truck and I'll have to white-knuckle it the 76 miles round-trip to work on a foul weather day. My stock BFG's have 19k miles on them, and not enough tread to make it through winter.
Gas-Tires-n-Oil 01-03-2007, 10:33 AM I had tire wear on the insides also. This, I found out, is due to the front tires being aligned with a negative camber from the factory. This apparently is to help with turn-in on corners for better handling. Since I don't drive this on the track and just around town, I told the dealer to take the negative camber out of the front tires and take it back to 0. I wanted to do this because I was replacing the rear tires (funny how those tend to wear out faster if you extend your tire rotations!) but at the time noticed the severe wear on the inside of the fronts. I put the new tires up front and the old ones put in back because they still had usable tread. It has been three months since the alignment and I have had no wear issues on the front tires and really no noticable difference in handling for around town. I just have to replace the rear tires pretty soon.
asktk 01-05-2007, 11:56 AM Just replaced my KDWS with Continental ContiExtremeContact AS tires. Decided against the KUHMO's based on negative reviews. I live in Pennsylvania, and may have to drive in snow - so had to sacrifice some traction to AS with 400 treadwear.
Interesting thing was that while my KDWS still appeared to have tread, when they pulled the tires off, the belts were exposed on the inside edges.
I had them do a 4 wheel alignment - and was amazed at the difference in driveability. Previously the steering felt very heavy, but now I can drive it with 2 fingers. Again, realize I've given up some handling, but new tires every 22,500 miles can get a bit expensive.
theonlygtoindelta 03-18-2008, 04:47 PM hey i just signed up here... i got a 2006 gto with 13000 miles on it and by the time it hit 15K my rear tires had the insides wore out all the way to the threads. the front ones are good. any ideas???

With the GTOs Independent Rear Suspension and a heavy foot on the thottle, your going to wear the insides of the rear tires fast. Went through my first pair at 9K. Try rotating them sooner or lighten up on the right foot.
I haven't been able to master the latter!:D
PS- Welcome aboard!
Wretched 6.0 03-19-2008, 11:17 AM 2 things make inside tire wear an issue
1. front tire wear from bad radius rod bushings
2 rear tire wear from crappy ass oe springs, replacing them with 0 drop springs that raise it back up and don't allow it to sag under accell as much will help greatly.

How is the ride with the aftermarket springs?
Wretched 6.0 03-19-2008, 01:21 PM stiffer, but not harsh
Orbit Orange 03-19-2008, 04:17 PM How is the ride with the aftermarket springs?
I can't vouch for the Pedders 0 drop rears, but I assume they are similar to the King 0 drops I have on the rear. The ride is stiffer, more "poised", but not overly harsh. I had the rear shocks replaced at the same time with some Monroe Sensa-Tracs and am very happy with this setup. I also have the SLP rear sway and bushings set on the firmest setting as well. I really like the taut feeling it has in the back.

I'm very curious about this as I'm close to getting new tires. The old rear springs had some slight sag and the rears would wear in the center section of the tire. Can't wait to see if the new springs improve the wear pattern of the new tires. Can't wait to ditch my worn BFG g-Sports for some new rubber.
And so Wretched doesn't freak out, I do plan on doing front suspension someday as well (I'm sure he would suggest it), but the wallet dictates the mods. :)

What kind of tires are you planning on?
Orbit Orange 03-19-2008, 09:57 PM What kind of tires are you planning on?
I'm planning on a less pricey tire again, since I plan on only getting about 20K miles max. I've been thinking about Dunlop Direzza DZ101's or Falken FK452's or stepping up to BFGoodrich g-Force KDW's. I'm looking around a 300 wear rating or so and I'm also looking for a lighter tire. The old BFGoodrich g-Force Sports were VERY good for the first 8 to 10K miles. Recently they are wearing poorly (could be suspension related of course) and getting some road noise and "whump-whumping" for lack of a better term. Keeping Summer only tires on year-round is pushing it in my area of the country. We don't get much snow and if we do I'll use the El Camino as the "snow-beater". Playing with a limited budget sucks but I still have fun.
Wretched 6.0 03-20-2008, 12:44 AM As for your noise, run your hands around the inside of the tire, i bet you'll find the front tires inner edge is cupped
If that's the case it can be fixed but parts will need to be installed.
As for the tires,
Don't be fooled by the treadwear rating. The treadwear rating can only be used to compare tires from the same manufacturer.
If a Bridgestone is 140, and you find another Bridgestone that is 280, then that should last twice as long.
If you find a BFG that is 280 it doesn't compare at all, expect to other BFG's.
It's all a bit wacky, but that's how it is.
Orbit Orange 03-20-2008, 11:48 AM There is a slight bit of wear on the insides of both fronts. It's not bad yet. Looks like the alignment I had 20K miles ago is still "holding" so to speak. I know it will get worse with age so someday I'll be paying you guys a visit and getting a few of your products for the front suspension. Wanted to hear that I bet. ;) Just wish you were closer when the time comes. I appreciate your advice and glad you are a good resource to have here at the site. :D
Wretched 6.0 03-20-2008, 06:54 PM Are there any shops close to you that you can recommend?
We are always on the look out for new shops that will be a good fit with us,
Orbit Orange 03-20-2008, 10:04 PM Can't really say I can around my area. I'll keep my eyes open and look around but when it comes to "performance" shops they are basically limited to Truck lift kit outfits and body shops that seem to close about a year after they open. Slim pickins down here. :(
I believe you have some dealers/installers in the St.Louis area???
Wretched 6.0 03-21-2008, 07:04 AM I don't believe we do

I would have to agree.
1. I fought dealers and alignment shops about my front tire wear. I took the advise of others and replaced the radius rod bushings. That's when I found that my left side was blown out! Not long after Mike White found my strut bushings torn at 19K. They were so bad they kept them as an example. :o
2. I had to replace my tires at 12K. Never knew my rear springs was sagging so bad till I was bottoming out on a full tank. I replaced the rear springs and gained 2 1/2" or so in the rear.
All in all I've replaced all four springs (0" drop), strut tower bushings/bearings, front radius rod bushings and the swaybars. The car drives straight again, great tire wear, and feels like a sports car. The ride is stiffer now. But so much better.
