I need to know, not what the book says but from driver experience, which is the faster of the two the 05' automatic gto or the 05' manual gto. I don't care about daily driver, I just want to know which puts up a faster et, which one will pull a bone out of another car quicker the manual or the automatic

The answer depends more on your skill than the cars capabilities.

If you are GOOD with a stick, then the manual should be faster than the auto. But we are only talking about a few 10ths of a second.

Myself, I would accept nothing less than a stick in a GTO. It's just what I prefer. Much more fun.

If you are serious into drag racing (i.e. you are building a car for the strip, not the street) then an auto would be faster. But we would be talking about replacing stock with something like a turbo400, and using a quick shifter. I'm guessing you are just talking about streetlight to streetlight, though.

Times put out by GM showed the auto a tenth of a second quicker. This due to the precision shifting of the tranny. I assume they had a professional drive the stick. Armed with that knowledge, I bought a stick anyway, cuz it's more fun,(for me).

A car like the GTO with an automatic transmission is like taking a shower with a raincoat on, IMHO.

You also get much better fuel mileage if you drive highways with the M6.

Besides, with the 6 speed, I've gone from 5th to 3rd going around a 'stang and chirped the tires. That's where some of the fun comes in with a stick. But, I'm not a strip guy, just a city driver.

Having said that, it can be a pain with tight city traffic never getting out of second. The other thing in city traffic is the forced 1st-4th shift...I hate it and want mine disabled.

The 1-4 skip shift used to drive me NUTS in my 96 TransAm. In the 05 Goat, I very very seldom encounter it. I either shift earlier or later than the skip window naturally (it is narrower than the 06 T/A) and almost never have to worry about it.

yeterday me and my cousins answered our own question who the man and it is the automatic with over 800 lbs in the car it feel more powerful and more responsive then the manual. it like the automatic is not wasting power and by the time you down shift a manual with a push of the pedal on the auto the little man in the transmissions never misses and you is always on the shift peak and if you shift the automatic manual it kicks even harder give you more power. so the auto is the man

fyi: we love manual and are good at drive them between all three of me and my cousins we all drag race from 13 's to 10's cars we have all together 51 years of street illegal and drag strip

Sheesh who in the world would buy a GTO with an automatic!

My car happens to be my daily driver also. So a 6-speed was out of the question. I like to be able to take a drink or what-not in traffic.

My car is as quick as a 6-speed. :P

AND I am getting ready to do the the 8-speed auto conversion.
