High speeds and paint chips

You all probably knew this anyway and I suspected it would happen too but here's a quick precautionary tale to all interested.

After a quick banzai blast up to 140 today (smooth straight rural road, recently paved, NO traffic whatsoever) I take a look at the front lip of my hood hoping against hope the inevitable rock chips aren't there, but there were 2 very small new ones. Oh well, it's my own d@mn fault anyway. Evidently bugs at those speeds must be enough to chip the paint because I'm not sure what could have kicked up a rock or pebble when there was no traffic in sight.

So just a word of advice to you all, if you don't like the rock chips, you might want to keep it at a safer speed. Which I'm sure you knew anyway. My story just reinforces the truth I guess. Or get a bra for your Goat I guess.

Time for some touch-up paint! :jumpon:

The same thing happened to me! I was so mad!! I really can't see it now because of the rust. But I know it's there and I have no one to blame but myself.

I worked for the company "autobahnd" for a short wile, www.autobahndint.com

It's a 3m type shrinkwrap that goes over the hood, lights, front bumper and mirrors.

It's effective, I have it on my camaro, you can barely tell, but IMO the few chips I pick up are not worth $5-700 in prevention.

The stuff works the best on silver cars IMO B)

Thin paint is the problem. Trust me the paint is thin on these cars. I have re-done much of my paint (not voluntary) it has been keyed twice ! My new .45 should effectively reduce further vandalism.............

I feel your pain on the chips and dings. It's a different chip or ding whenever I wash my car. Living in a major city, you come to expect the road gremlins to be out 24-7. But I've owned other cars here for years and never had the scale of chips that are starting to appear.

I agree that the paint seems to be applied very sparsely in terms of coats. The problem lies with the fact that it's sprayed in the factory, yet they give a brush-on applicator to "match" the flaw. I had soemone look at the confetti size chip in my hood, and they recommended to wait until I got a few more before having the hood repainted! Did the Aussies follow their standards for the application of paint or GM's in America?
