I just traded in my 2004 GTO for a 2005. I am really enjoying it - however, with 1,200 miles on it, I am getting a burning smell from the exhaust - sort of seems like a lining in the exhaust burning off or something? The dealer said it should last maybe 500 miles at most - but this doesn't seem to be improving. I did not have this problem on my '04, but I have seen that a couple of other owners of 05's have said the same thing. Anyone else out there have a similar problem? Also, temp gauge, etc shows everything where it should be and it is certainly running fine.

What type of burning smell are we talking about?

Is it a sweetish smell? Is it a sooty, oil-like smell?

Is there any smoke in the exhaust or is it just smell?

When does it happen? Only at start-up or when hot? Is it all the time? Maybe some of our technically knowledgable people could venture a guess with a little more info. Sorry I can't help much. :(

There is no smoke that comes out - it isn't like a burning oil smell - more like it is burning off a lining in the exhaust system or something. It typically happens when the car has warmed up - but certainly that would seem to indicate that the exhaust system has heated up as well.
I did figure that it may just be breaking in, but it was pretty different than my experience with my 04

My 05 with 2500 mi which is 5 months old and running great also emits a burning smell especially if I have been winding it up. However, it seems to be slowly going away with time.
