: Break in Period for LS2
JBullGator 12-17-2005, 10:52 PM I just traded my 04 A4 for a 05 M6. Blk/Blk the last one on the Lot, my Dealer gave me a deal I could not refuse. I got in two races tonight won both but I am a little concerned about running that hard with only 500 miles on my car. I probaly should have stayed out of it but its just to hard to say no.
Is there a break in period or is it ok to run it once in a while?
LA_Phantom 12-17-2005, 11:16 PM You may want to check the owner's manual. For what I understand, based on forum conversations, there are suggestions as how to properly break in the '05 GTO. I did not follow these guides. However, I only really got on it once during the first 500 miles. Beside that time, I kept the RPM's below 3500 (generally below 3000). I think that I recall someone mentioning the car should not be driven above 55 MPH during break-in. I know that I would run it up to 75-80 MPH, but in 6th gear the RPM's are way low.
JBullGator 12-19-2005, 09:42 AM I checked my owners manual, you were right it reccomends 55 mph and under for the first 500 miles. Kinda hard to do but I will give it a shot.
Thanks.
Fat Nick 12-19-2005, 09:37 PM Lay on it and don't get off it, just make sure it's warmed up. You want to make sure everything seals well.

Thats one philosophy.
thunderdan 12-22-2005, 05:17 PM A buddy of mine in high school has a father who bought a 1966 impala SS396 brand new and drove it home to the farm some 18 miles away with the hammer down the whole way. Buried the speedo and everything. Naturally, I asked him why he would do that to a brand new car. He replied that the radiator blew but nothing else happened. He also replied that "if it was gonna break, it was going to happen under warranty!" Barnyard logic. I responded that if something didn't break now but was severly or somewhat damaged then it may fail just after the warranty expires. he just shrugged. Mldavis has a few post up here about why cars should be broken in--good info.
DURAZ28 12-24-2005, 06:51 PM break it in like your gonna drive it right from the start dyno results have show they make more hp that way
sccaGTO 12-27-2005, 06:32 PM There were rules? I broke them all on the first night. Drove from the next county over. 70 mph most of the way, up to 120 at one time. I even got on the throttle leaving the dealership. I was (& still am) loving the power. It's like a drug. I never get enough.

I too am a little cocerned because the manual says to stay out of it for the first 500 and lets just say with less then 600 miles on the clock i've already been on a few spirited runs---i think we'll be fine
:D

Croft316 01-21-2006, 02:40 AM 55 mph seems like a pretty low speed to me.. You drive 55 mph on the freeway around Atlanta, you'll get your @ss ran off the road. I don't see how it could harm the car running in the 60's or 70's seeing as how those are the normal speed limits on interstates across the country.
Nocturn 01-21-2006, 03:30 PM Its a matter of the RPM and the engine being new, with the brand new engine running it at certain RPM can be considered bad...at least by some theories.
