: GTO not a day old, refuses to start!!!

I have been researching and idolizing this car for 3 years, and I finally picked up my black/black 6MT 06 yesterday. I drove it home from the dealer and put ti in my garage. Three hours later I go down to take it out for the night, and it refuses to start.

So i call pontiac roadside and they ask if I had lights and radoi function and I say yes, the next thing they tell me is "do you know you need to puch in the clutch to start the car?" I flipped out. I work for UPS, everything there is stick shift and I have been driving it for years, needless to say that didnt amuse me lol.

So they tell me that they have to tow it to storage and than have it towed back to the dealer on tuesday when they re-open to try to fix it. I didnt want it in storage so I said i would call it in as disabeled on Tuesday and have it brought to the dealer then.

I have always talked up GM and American cars with everyone i know. Two of the drivers in my UPS building both bought new pontiacs from different dealers one a solstice, and another a G6. Both have been in for service within the last month, the solstices' electric system had a short in it and the G6 has had 2 check engines in 2 weeks. Its like quality from 15 years ago just came back all of a sudden. So now my weekend plans are finished, and I cant get to work Tuesday because i have to deal with this. Score one for GM.

Has anyone had a problem like this with their new GTO?

Well did it try to turn over? If not its a starter issue and will need to be replaced, nothing big but inconvienant none the less. Try not to get to upset with the dealers, they have to deal with some stupid people out there who don't know what their doing alot of the time.

yeah it tried turning over, it does not seem like an electrical problem, the battery runs everything and the starter does what a normal starter would do starting any car. it is the engine that refuses to turn over.

Ive never had a problem with my gto up this point (knocking on wood). Keep the faith brother . I can imagine that a problem this early on has got to be disheartening but hopefully youll have it back after a short wait and not have anymore problems. However at least it will be fixed under warrenty and in the mean time i bet if asked the dealship you bought it from will get you something to drive in the mean time . make sure you tell them you want something comparable to the gto. The dealership i bought mine from has bent over backwards to be sure i was satisfied with my purchase. Hopefully yours will do the same.

Try to start the car again. I've heard rumors from Texas, and it happened to both me and a friend a couple weeks ago. Apparently, if you use an ethanol blend in the car you can have a problem like this occur. It seems that ethanol attracts water. This is why it has to be shipped by truck and train instead of by pipeline. It absorbs way to much water going through a pipeline. Should the ethanol blend you buy be from a tank with a crack or there has been high humidity it could have trapped water with it. It normally burns ok but should you turn the engine off with water loaded ethanol close to the injectors the fuel heat soaks and the water vaporizes. If the car is left to cool sufficently, the water condenses and the car will start.

The car sat in the garage all day... about 18 hours after the incident I tried to start it again, it wouldnt turn over, all electrical thing functioning normal. Again just now at 0030 I tried again, same result.

Sorry about your woes man. Heard some issues from loose wiring to the computer being bad. Have you tried your spare key, maybe something with the security system? But like gto n 442 said above, the dealship should take good care of you and if they don't, try another. Good luck and hope it is resolved soon. So you can get on the road and get this all behind you.

I'm not saying this to sound like a wise @$$ but it does have gas in it correct?

Is the starter cranking but the engine won't turn over?

Whatever the case let us know what happens if you have it towed into the dealer. I don't think we have a report of this happening yet on this site. Sorry for your misfortune on a long holiday weekend.

Yes it has gas in it lol.. The same gas that the dealer put in it from the beginning. I picked it up with 40 miles on it and now it has 91. The starter cranks, and the battery runs everything. Tomorrow morning they are going to tow it in, and I will go with the car and be out for blood if it is something that serious that someone missed when it was prepped for delivery.

I will keep everyone informed with an update tomorrow when i get back to my house either with my goat or a loaner

If I'm interpreting what you say correctly (starter works but engine won't turn over), then the starter must not be engaging the flywheel.

The GTO rides again!!

It was towed to the dealer at 7:15am this morning, they had someone there ready for it at 7:45. By 8, I was told that they knew that it was an electrical problem caused by a faulty and improperly charged battery. They told me that the battery ruined the electrical components needed to start the car and have it idle evenly, to prevent this from happening the car dected the problem and would not start at all.

By 1000 it has some new fuses, and a new alternator. It took until 1100 to get a GTO battery into the dealer. I was told they are different in the way that they are set up. Once the battery was put in, they let it idle for a few minutes and reset the computer. By 1130 I was back in business.

Thanks for all of your help.

My car did the same thing, but not in the same time frame as yours. I bought it, drove it around for a few days....then let it sit for a couple weeks. (Bad weather, winter) Went to get it in the first clear day and it wouldn't start. Battery was dead. Lights still worked, etc....just didn't have enough a$$ to crank it. I put it on a charger for a few mins, it started and has been fine ever since. I reckon the battery really didn't have such a good "upbringing", since it sat on the dealer lot for almost a year before I bought it.

Hi!! i was in the same boat as you... except it took way longer than one day for the "technicians" to fix it!!!
I had my car for 4 hours... then the nasty lil engine light came on... that was in June 11th of 05... i am still dealing with some really strange happenings... :o
