None, I'd wait. There is nothing else out there that I would really want and would work for me this year. <_<

BUT, since we do have the GTO it doesn't really matter! :D

I'd go with a BMW. I'm not quite sure what model. I'd need to see one up close and personal as I'm not as familiar with their products as I am GM's. I look into the overall picture a lot more now than when I was a young lad. If I'm going to buy it these days it needs to meet my expectations fully to even be considered. As to the GTO I like the rumors I'm hearing about the performance, now if pricing falls in line my excitement level will definitely go up! I have faith that the guy's in the "Glass Towers" in Detroit are once again going to come through for all of us! :D Another thing this car has going for it with me is the Holden build quality. Either the Aussies just never complain or this car is put together very well. I feel as others do here about buying American but I also feel competition is a good thing. There's no way I'll pay more and take inferior quality to keep my money here. It's a global market and at least it appears Bob Lutz knows that you can't win the game unless you use all of your best players. It's still a wait and see thing for me and I hope we see some more "official" information on it soon so I'll not have so much time on my hands to write letters! :type:

Take care,

I hear what you're saying. Over hear they've had a push to buy Australian made for years. With asvertising campaigns, Australian made labels and stickers on all sorts of things. However they always had the proviso in their slogan that if "it's as good or better, and competitively priced" then buy local. Of course the marketing people play all sorts of games with the labeling rules in regards to domestic content and such.

Well the CTS-V is alright, but it's quite a bit more expensive and it has 2 more doors than a GTO. That makes a huge difference, doesn't it? It does to me anyway. And I'm not ready to buy a Caddy just yet, gimme another 20 years maybe.

There are two things that turn me off about the CTSV.

#1 The "legos" styling Remember transformers? (Transformers=CTSV)

#2 the fact that it is a Cadillac. I mean who ever heard of moding a Cadillac.

#3 it is $17,000 more than a GTO (okay that is three things but those of you that read my posts know that I can't count.)

Also a C6 - but only if we could get in and out of it comfortably. That's one reason why my 96 C4 is going in on the GTO. Love the Corvette but wife and I are getting too creaky. And the rough ride is getting kinda old too, sad to say.

I was close to deciding on a C5 or waiting for the C6 when I discovered the Holden Goat. Just in time! Phew.

Hey don't laugh. Well on second thought - go ahead. I had a 96 V70R AWD Wagon. Went like stink, handled, comfy, good on gas. Just one thing: the quality of these cars sucked! Batteries were failing, brakes wearing out in less than 10k, a number of other annoyances both big and minor. I dumped it for a Silverado.

Extremely disappointed that a carmaker with the Volvo reputation apparently took a bunch of shortcuts (read:used cheap materials/parts) in this car and sold it as a premium machine. Fool me once.......

I was kind of half-heartedly kidding, as the S60 R is a nice ride and I might consider it, however, I have known a few Volvo owners over the years and reliabilty is not one of their strong suits.

Seriously though - I agree with Scott, a used M5 would be a REALLY nice automobile.

If I can dream... I'd like a C6 Z06 or a new M6.

Well I think it was always going to be a struggle for Lutz to bring any more of the Holden range into the US to fill some holes in the GM range. But since there may well be a VE production plant built in the US, it could just be that there will be a number of other models to grace the shopping list in the not too distant future. Could be AWD or RWD wagons, sedans, utilities and off roaders all sporting ls1s or better.

This is a very interesting thread. :D

I'd try to be brand loyal.

New GTP Comp G or 2005 GP GXP
New Bonneville GXP (It might be out of my price range)

If I could get one pretty cheap through my brother (Chevy dealer salesman)
2004 Silverado SS (could be too pricey, and I'm not sure about the truck angle also)

I might go used, a 2002 Trans Am???

I just cringe at Ford's though. Even though the Cobra and Lightning tempt me. I just can't get past them being Ford's. I know, I know. That's just me.

I'm formulating my alternate plans now as the new GTO could be priced out of my range if Pontiac jacks up the MSRP. HEAR THAT PONTIAC, DON'T GET GREEDY! :jumpon:

I had a c5 corvette and traded it in for the gto, if there was no gto I would have probably kept my vette but the lack of a back seat and the hard ride (stiff suspension) was its main drawback. (not to mention the high insurance, anyone know what the GTO will cost comparatively speaking?). Also I hate to admit it but I would have taken a hard look at the mustang cobra. I also had a 2001 gtp grand prix and that car was very nice but I don't particularly like the 04's. A BMW would also be nice but I work for GM and wouldn't spend my money on a foreign car (wouldn't be able to drive it to work anyway). B)

I would probably consider a few vehicles.

Bonneville GXP
Infiniti G35 (maybe)
Volvo S60R
Audi S4 (expensive though)
Cadillac CTS-V (also expensive)
Next gen BMW M3 w/V8 (also expensive, probably around 50k)
Next gen BMW M5 or M6 w/V10 (I know, these cars will be wacky money. But a 550 hp V10 just sounds so good)

edge929

Either the RX8, WRX STi or the Lancer Evo, Cobra SVT, Elise

Most likely it would be the WRX seeing how it'll hand the GTO it's ass in 0-60 along with the Lancer Evo ASSUMING there are no variables except the car itself. But I plan on handing the Evo and WRX it's ass with my GTO without any mods. Driver experience will make up for the half second.

Co-worker has a G35 coupe, nice but not sporty enough. Maybe a 2002 Camaro if I could find a good one. Or maybe even a new F150. I looked at the Lexus IS300's but they aren't sporty enough either. After everything I looked at, I kept coming back to the GTO.

God forbid I say it, but the 03 Cobra SVT is very tempting with it's 390HP and Ford is having a cash-back of 1500 bone on them right now, putting the price to 33,700 which is probably gonna be cheaper than the GTO, but not by much.

The Lotus Elise is very tempting also. Looks like a $200,000 dollar car for 35-40 grand.

Hmmm, interesting question. Since I'm not sure if I'll get a GTO or not, I'll say these are the vehicles i'm looking at to buy in about 2 years;

2005/6 GTO
RX7 (the '93-'95 Twin Turbo's)
RX8
300ZX Twin Turbo
350Z on a good deal
Camaro SS or WS6 Trans Am
2003/4 Cobra
2005 new 'Stang GT

Lots of options!! :D

Gonna have to be the Lotus Elise for me. At $40k this little go cart is expected to do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds with a 190 HP reliable Toyota engine and tranny. It's got the killer looks, great handling and the U.S spec car will have A/C, stereo, airbags. ABS and still be under 2,000 lbs.

Only downside is only 2 seats and hard to get in and out.

TandA
10-29-2003, 12:48 PM
4 seats is a must for me (2 Kids), so my if my next car isn't the GTO, I'll be real interested in the G35 Coupe. It's gonna be a hard decision.

I want to get a GTO in 2005, if it wasn't made I'd go with

1) C6 (if I can afford it in 2years)
2) used C5
3)Keep my 2000 SS
4)2005 Mustang GT or Mach1

G35 and 330 coupe are nice but I need more HP

Just for grins I looked at the local dealer. The price of $39,000 quoted in Road and Track is a minimum of $60,000 at this dealer. Of course this dealer is less than a mile from the Microsoft Campus in Redmond WA. I agree that it is $200,000 car performance and with a 4 cylinder of all things.

Not to get off topic, but I heard the Elise was suppose to start at $32,000 and be available in April 2004. The nearest dealership for me is some 4 hours away, but hey, it's worth it if I can get one for $35K.

Not sure what the specs are, but I've "heard"

156HP
5.1 0-60
14.0 0-100

Yeah, I thought "156HP with a 5.1?!?!!?" Then when you see the car, it's like the size of a shoebox. Incredibly light at some 1665 lbs!

R&T had 0-60 in 4.8 and the 1/4 in 12.0. I'd say that if you can find it for under 40k it would be a steal. They are only making 3,000 for 2004. I think is said slightly smaller than a Miata. It is a shoebox!!

See my post regarding the HSV Avalanche. That thing may well be perfect for someone like you and if they never import them then the idea is ripe for Pontiac development, just gotta get that Holdenesque plant hapening over there.

The problem we have is the fuel tank location. Had to be totally redesigned

for the GTO . If you look carefully you will see the fuel filler in a totally

different location to our Monaros. Our utes allready have the tanks in

front of the rear wheels and an all wheel drive dual cab is about to be

released. The all wheel drive will be adapted to the rest of the range later.

Get ready for Gen IV all wheel drive GTO. AWESOME !!!!!.

I'd Supercharge my BMW 3Series or maybe get a used 5Series V8. There isn't much out there to pick from under $40,000. In fact I have the S/C in my garage and am selling it to make a downpayment on the GTO.

I believe that the Rover motor was not approved for use in the US and that's why they had to go with the Celica engine.
