: Need Tire Advice
LS2goat 12-06-2006, 11:58 AM I would appreciate a little wise advice from those of you who have already replaced your tires. I have an 05 Goat with 11,000 miles on it. The tires are still in pretty good shape, but I want to know what I'm going to replace them with in the near future. I have 17 inch stock on right now and would like to know your suggestions for brand, size and expected mileage and cost per tire. Snow is not a factor where I live. I'm not looking for a mega performance tire, just an all-around decent performer. Thanks
LA_Phantom 12-06-2006, 06:28 PM BRMike might be able to give some good information, as he just replaced the tires on his car. However, I think that he got a pretty good deal on the tires.

mechanic58 12-06-2006, 06:35 PM One thing you can try just to get an idea is go to tirerack.com do a search for tires that are the size you need and choose the option to sort by most popular or best seller (I forget exactly how its set up) and see what comes up. Personally, I've never seen the sense in buying THE best tire (usually most expenesive, not always BEST) you can buy. That's usually a waste of money, especially for a high performance car like the GTO, that's just gonna grind em off on the back anyway. Find one that's middle of the road in price and is popular (on that site) and chances are you'll end up with a good affordable tire that'll do everything you need it to do.
LS2goat 12-07-2006, 11:48 AM Thanks for the info.
BRMike 12-07-2006, 03:00 PM I ordered a set of Kumho Ecsta SPT from Tire Rack. $108 per tire (235/40ZR18). I did a little research and came to the conclusion that the Kumho offered the most bang for the buck.
Orbit Orange 12-07-2006, 03:54 PM I love the BFGoodrich g-Force Sports that I have on right now. Got them from Discount Tire Direct for around 112 bucks each. They are "Summer Only" but I'm managing them so far as we've had no snow .... yet. :)
mechanic58 12-07-2006, 08:13 PM I was going to suggest Kuhmos, but I didn't want anyone telling me to go piss up a rope. lol.

do not even attempt to drive summer tires in even the thinnest layer of snow. I made that mistake . The car wouldnt get any traction but whats worse is its inability to stop. I went right through traffic lights semi sideways in 1/2 inch of snow. It was a death ride. I figured it was a 50/50 id crash driving 2 miles to my house.

That's what the beater is for. ;)
I do plan on taking it out once just to see how bad it is, when we do get the white stuff. Don't worry I'll drive it REAL easy and probably only around the block. :)

papacon60 12-16-2006, 08:22 AM I live in Illinois, I have a 2005 GTO. Who, in their right mind, would drive a new GTO in the snow anyway? There is a great place for your GTO in the winter: it's called a GARAGE!
Orbit Orange 12-16-2006, 09:35 AM I live in Illinois too. We haven't seen a flake of snow yet down here in southern Illinois. Technically I guess it isn't even winter yet though, as the first day is the 22nd of December.
What part of Illinois do you live in papacon60? I'll guess Chicagoland. I used to live 4 hours north of where I do now and we'd get a lot more snow than down here. Winters here in the southern part of the state are FAR more mild temperature wise and precipitation wise than the northern half. Let's me keep driving the GTO a lot more too. :)
JJay374 12-16-2006, 05:02 PM I bought four new Exclaim UHP tires from tirerack, they are sitting in my garage. Got them for 79.00 a pair, and have the best overall rating for us.

Did you get experiance the Ice Storm. My kids live in Belleville, and they were without power for 4 days from that storm.
Orbit Orange 12-16-2006, 07:09 PM Nope, I'm farther south and we got bumpkus. Lucky I guess, many were out of power near St.Louis for several days. Ice storms are worse than blizzards in my estimation.
papacon60 12-16-2006, 08:01 PM Orbit Orange: I live in northern Illinois, close to the Wisconson border. My goat is supercharged, and the intake for the intercooler is right up front, under the front facia, so I don't drive the car in weather that's not sunny, and dry. This season, we have had only one snowstorm of 12". I hope that's it for the winter!

Don't hold your breath. ;)
Up there on the border you can get some helacious snowstorms. Sounds like you'll have to tuck the Goat in nice and snug. If I had your setup it wouldn't see the white stuff either. :)
