: Tranny issue after installs
imcordell 03-21-2007, 08:25 AM Hi, I think I'm having a small issue with my transmission. I have an 05 with an M6. About a week ago I installed the GMM ripshift and I replaced my tranny fluid with royal purple and i installed the skipshift eliminator. Now what is seeming to happen is that when first driving the car, when i get into it in the morning or after i haven't driven it for several hours, when I shift from 1st to 2nd it feels like there is alittle bit of grinding. Its not enough to keep my from shifting it into gear or its not loud or obnoxious, I can just feel it through the shifter handle. Thats the only gear that it does it in and it will only do it maybe once or twice and it doesn't happen if i bring the rpm's up to about 2500 or higher before I shift. Its really strange to me. Now, I don't know if this is really connected to the work that I did to the car because I don't remember feeling this at all for several days after I finished the installs.
Could I maybe have not put enough tranny fluid in or messed up one of my synchros somehow?

I was going to ask the first part of the question you posed. How did you fill the transmission, and how much RP did you put in? Off the top of my head, I seem to recall a quantity of 4.6 quarts, but please do not rely on my memory. Do some checking and ensure that you have added to proper amount of transmission fluid. I am of course assuming that you filled your transmission with the proper type of fluid. ;)
If I were to haphazard a guess, I would say that you probably have not messed up a synchro. In addition to checking the fluid level, how are you on the adjustment of the GMM?

imcordell 03-21-2007, 03:53 PM Well, at first i topped it off from the fill hole. I got about 3.8 in drove home and read that it wasn't enough b/c the instruction manual said fill from the reverse light plug. So I tried to get that off, which i couldn't, then I read that if you jack it up on the left that you should be able to get just about the 4.6 in through the fill plug. So I did that, I had an xtra bottle handy thankfully and I think I got the required amount in. I know I didn't get the whole bottle in because there was alot on my shirt and in my hair, thanks to the **** pump and some pouring out onto the ground. But yeah anyway i think i have the right amount in there now.
I think i'm adjusting pretty well to the GMM, i've got it down to feeling as comfortable as I did with the stock shifter. What concerns me is that I wasn't noticing this issue after I installed the shifter. I let my roommate drive it a few days later, then i changed the air filter the next day and when i drove it later that night I noticed the problem. I dunno if maybe my roomie slammed the gear in a bad way and messed something up. He didn't do anything catastrophic, I was in the car with him. I mean, he's a better driver than I am in a manual. Who knows...

Ok...it sounds like you have the fluid quantity under control. Maybe you understood what I was talking about, but I feel like I want to clarify myself. When I spoke of the GMM adjustments, I was referring to the set screws associated with the shifter itself. I know of a few GTO pilots who did not get this quite right (i.e., set screw gap set too wide or too narrow) and they ended up with shifting problems and/or difficulty getting the transmission to go into a specific gear, or gears. I know that when I installed my GMM Rip Shifter (Race Version), I spent an inordinate amount of time to get the set screws adjusted properly.
I let my roommate drive it a few days later, then i changed the air filter the next day and when i drove it later that night I noticed the problem.
That was your first mistake! ;)

imcordell 03-21-2007, 06:39 PM Oh ok, yeah the stop bolts. We spent a while on them I should assume they're fine. Forgot to put loctite on them thought maybe they moved back alittle. Ummmm...But the T56 has built in stops for just that sort of thing. The stock shoft didn't have any stops on it did it?

I don't think that the stock shifter had such stops on it, but be careful. If those set screws on the GMM vibrate out of position, you will not have much fun getting the car in the proper gear. I think that I would go so far as to suggest that you take things apart and add the Loctite...Loctite "red".

imcordell 03-26-2007, 08:17 AM I decided to take off the skipshift eliminator before i brought it to the dealer last week and that seems to have solved the problem. So, a heads up to all you guys who have or might have the eliminator. Or maybe it was just a malfunctioning one.
mechanic58 05-05-2007, 12:26 PM I find this odd. The skip shif eliminator has nothing to do with the "mechanical gear change" operation. ALL it does is disable the solenoid that actuates the skip shift gate inside the shifter assembly. If I were a betting man, I'd say your oil change had more to do with it than anything. Oil that is too slippery will have that effect in a manual transmission. The purpose of the synchronizers is to "grab" the cone on the gear and synchronize it to the shaft speed so that it can be engaged without grinding. If the oil you use is too light or too slippery, it won't grab effectively and you'll experience that slight grinding you're speaking of. I have built MANY manual transmissions. I am 100% sure of this. The mixing of the royal purple with the remaining original fluid that was inside your transmission may have created a compatibilty problem that resulted in a slimey mixture. Now that you have been running it for awhile, this condition may have wayned. Just my .02.

You swapped your T56 in your 05 for a BMW M6 tranny? How'd you do that?
