: Where is all the weight at?
Commissar 10-30-2003, 07:55 PM Earlier today I read an article online (found a link on this board) that had a comparison between the 64 and 04 goats. It stated that the 64 was some 599 lbs lighter than the 04. So when we get down to it, the new goat is smaller, smaller lighter engine, lighter body..... Why does this car weigh more? I was thinking it wouldn't even be a close race.
The only thing I can think of is safety features and the underside cladding (but the cladding shouldn't add too much)
jon_we4 10-30-2003, 08:08 PM im sure the carpet, super nice leather, and all the comfy stuff in the interior plays a roll
Rocket 10-30-2003, 09:13 PM muchless a power window motor, track. Power seat motors, tracks, 10 speakers, moon roof, A/C, just all of those simple little option just tally that weight right up! Its a pound here and a pound there......Thill it reaches almost 4,000! :(

I wish the moon roof was on option....alas...it is not.

98formula 10-30-2003, 09:34 PM I think it's just the construction. I remember reading somewhere that Holden uses a lot more steel than most. Where some use plastic, Holden uses steel for some reason.
I believe that an independent rear suspension adds weight.
scottknight 10-30-2003, 10:28 PM You would be amazed at how little mass there is in the structure and how much there is in the stuff that goes in. There are miles of wires (wire does not feel heavy until you try to tug an entire wiring harness out of a modern car), computers, ABS system, airbags, power everything, sound deadening, climate control system, and on and on. Even the IRS adds some.
Interestingly, some things are much lighter, like the engine, glass, radiators, wheels, brakes, suspension components, sheetmetal is much thinner, interior trim, and probably some others I am forgetting in my haste.
It is pretty interesting for anyone that is in the automotive industry to compare cars of today with those of 40 years ago. The general layout is pretty much the same, but there are so many 'standard' features in a modern car that did not even exist back then, that they are really nothing alike at all.
edsmaroonz 10-30-2003, 10:42 PM no t tops or moon roof for me/ remember cars get faster and lighter the older they get for some reason

This would mean the 64 weighed a mere 3125 pounds! NO WAY!!!
I'm looking at a couple of numbers here that disagree with that.
GTO 2 dr conv 3610 lbs
GTO 2 dr coupe 3560 lbs
GTO 2 dr hardtop 3590 lbs
I'm not sure whoever did the math for the 599 lbs but I think they need to go back to school. 3725 - 3560 is ONLY 165 POUNDS! :zippy: (I know you are just quoting them Commisar :) )
The lightest Tempest I see in 64 is the 2dr hardtop at 3185 lbs and this probably has the 4 cylinder engine. Don't believe that 599 lb. number.

SWEET, FINALLY someone makes a car that has a roof without a huge hole in it for a stupid moon roof! The moon roof does nothing but make the Car FLEX. I am so happy to hear that. I just assumed that that was standard feature along with all of the other things they included for us!
mmciau 10-31-2003, 03:24 AM Forum,
IIRC, the Monaro's "C" Panel (external I think) is 1.00 mm thick instead of the normal 0.8 mm. I believe the extra thickness provided substantial body rigidity in that region

CoolBlu04 10-31-2003, 12:41 PM Car & Driver mentions that because of Australian roads, the suspension pieces are actually pretty beefy. That accounts for some of the weight.
edsmaroonz 11-02-2003, 02:06 PM yea where is all the weight? in the new r/t buyers guid 2004 the gto curb weight is3725 and the bonneville is 3590 g/p is3477. vette3246 ???
cvp33 11-02-2003, 06:49 PM Our GTO is a bit of a fat ass. I would like to know where all the weight is as well. I understand that the front facia is all metal and that we have under body cladding and the suspension is heavy duty but still, 3,725 lbs. is a load! Just think if we could engineer 200 to 300 lbs. out of her and pick up 50 hp with bolt-ons. Now we're easily in the 12's!
Davbo 11-02-2003, 06:58 PM Hey, remember that muscle weighs more than fat. I like to think our GTO is muscular, not fat. :P
edsmaroonz 11-02-2003, 08:40 PM good answer/ monday iam going to weigh my 2000z28 at the truck stop if i can??
Goat Soldier 11-02-2003, 10:13 PM Well, I'm starting with that mofugly spoiler! I hope it weighs at least 100lbs!

I second that. B)
Davbo 11-04-2003, 06:07 PM Did anyone else notice that the GTO gained a little bit more weight in the final numbers quoted by GM?
Curb weight (lb / kg) 3761 / 1706 (manual transmission)
3774 / 1712 (automatic transmission)

Tails 11-04-2003, 06:34 PM I think gravity sucks less in OZ then here.

edsmaroonz 11-05-2003, 09:22 PM took my 2000z28 loaded/auto/t tops with 1/2 tank gas to the scales it weighed in at 3520lbs//
Davbo 11-05-2003, 09:42 PM Very interesting. Thanks for the info Ed. :)
