CM_LS1 10-30-2003, 10:18 PM is this stuff that is being said true ?

JuniorSS 10-30-2003, 10:25 PM yea they had a number of problems with the car but was told by GM that it was one of the test cars. I'll relook at the article later and see if that all is true
edsmaroonz 10-30-2003, 10:37 PM it will only be true when one of us get to the track/ with a produced factory car then we will know???
JuniorSS 10-30-2003, 10:48 PM a list of the problems and broken parts they had were a battery tie down, the wing mounted center stop lamp fell off when one of its plastic screw shreaded, the A/C kept going on and off , the passenger seat motor broke and a suspension alignment. On the plus side they said that the seats were the most comfortable seats in any GM ( they did a 29 hour straight drive) and every two hours a rest reminder popped up on the cluster's LCD screen with an image of a tree and a picnic table. What is that all about?
CM_LS1 10-30-2003, 11:02 PM this is BS .... I have put my car ('99 model 4 door) through living hell !!! and have not had any of those problems, nor have I heard of any of the aussie members, having these problems.
CM_LS1 10-30-2003, 11:09 PM the tree and picnic table, is one of these campaign features to avoid tiredness & micro-sleeps during large trips , i think it goes - "stop, revive, survive"
Its to remind you to have your 15 minute power nap rather than trying to stay awake and becoming part of the landscape.
CoolBlu04 10-31-2003, 12:35 PM High praise was given to the seats. I like that! :D
NASA43 10-31-2003, 04:17 PM The C&D staff wasn't as impressed with the GTO as the MT staff. A big part though is they thought the exterior was boring. It's really interesting to read two different groups of people reviewing the same car (well, not the exact same car) and having vastly differing opinions. C&D said the brakes were mushy, one guy wasn't impressed with the interior, and they said GM would have to "ride its Australian subsidiary hard to keep the quality up". Umm, that's interesting. GM, the world leader in Quality Control. :D On the positive side they liked the "Corvette sound and power, Euro ride and handling, and acceptable price" (est $33,695).
Brock Yates really didn't like the Quick Silver color. He called it "dishwater-dull, battleship gray".
I can pretty much guarantee you that those were not final
production cars. Probably prototypes of some sort.
CM_LS1 10-31-2003, 08:10 PM from car & drivers own words - "The GTO charges headlights ablaze out of a toxic cloud of tire smoke to turn 5.3 seconds at 60 mph and 14 flat in the quarter mile at 102 mph, clobbering with big-bore snort new import coupes such as the Infiniti G35 and Mazda RX-8."
is this how they tested the 14.0 time ? in a cloud of tire smoke ?
Cperki1 10-31-2003, 09:26 PM Car and Driver has never been kind to GM cars.
chotton 10-31-2003, 09:44 PM Magazines like to be the first to test a car and offer up the cover as kind of a bribe to the manufactures. The magazine that gets chosen often get the exclusive road test as well. I think this is the case we are seeing with the GTO and Car and Driver is showing Pontiac their displeasure with POntiacs choice of giving the story to Motor Trend. We will see what happens when Automobile comes out. Probaly wont be like the Car and Driver situation since Automobile and Motor Trend are in bed together.
davis181 10-31-2003, 11:02 PM what color gto did caranddriver get to test.
1966_GTO_ 10-31-2003, 11:13 PM As soon as I saw the cover of the new C&D, I was shocked by how good that GTO looks in silver... I didn't get a chance to read the article yet, just a quick glance. I noticed in the verdict it was said that the stylind makes you say 'so what?' and they also claimed 'iffy' build quality. You can criticize C&D all you want but I believe and trust their oppinion and consider it when looking at cars to buy. Maybe I am just biased because it was the first auto mag I ever subscribed to and I have been getting it for a long time. And it isn't true that they don't think highly of GM vehicles. Just last issue they rated the Cadillac SRX better than the Porche Cayenne, the Infiniti FX45, and the VW Touareg. Anyway, I must say that the car looks great in silver, I just wouldn't go buying one anytime soon...
98formula 11-01-2003, 02:56 PM I have subscribed to both C&D and Motortrend for a very longtime, since I was in middle school. So I love them both, but I have to admit, C&D can be very hard on GM. So hard that many areas that can be wrong with the Germans, are ok. Where as if it happens on a GM product, it has "iffy" build quality. If anyone really takes a look they will see that companies like Mercedes have much worse reliability and build quality in many areas than GM. I love the Germans more than anything, but just stating that fact.
Also, I think C&D just has bad luck with cars. It seems that at least once in every issue they test a car and stupid stuff happens to it. Read that list of things that went wrong. How often does weird stuff like that happen? Especially to a company like Holden, with a pretty good quality reputation?!
hamarabi 11-01-2003, 11:35 PM In the Tech section I was happy to see 245/45 tires. I was a bit confused to read it only had a 6 speaker stereo system. Is this a change or did C/D miss a couple when they counted? Overall I'm pretty happy with the review, C/D pretty much panned both of my previous Gm cars ('92 Achieva SC & '99 Grand Prix GTP) so if they only negatives are styling (which I happen to like) and build quality which is pretty hard to judge on a sample of 1, I'm pretty happy.

cvp33 11-02-2003, 09:14 AM I think they confused the 10 speakers and 6 disc changer.
Gaijin 11-03-2003, 03:26 AM Still want to see the mag review for myself...probably will be awhile too.

And in MT the Tourag beat the SRX. It's all relative, I only trust Autoweek! And their test numbers won't be out for awhile as I understand it...
TriShield 11-03-2003, 08:08 PM Road and Track should have a review up soon, and from they've printed so far, they really like the car a lot.
I honestly expected all the critics to come down very hard on this car because it's built in Australia, becuase of the name it wears, and that sort of thing.
We'll see what happens.
Speedfreak 11-16-2003, 08:18 PM Has/Will Car & Driver put the GTO test on their TV show?
