: Nobody builds 'em like NISSAN!
cvp33 10-31-2003, 06:19 PM Nobody builds 'em like Nissan and that's a good thing! Second largest recall in Japanese history.
Nissan in Massive Recall
Nissan Motor Co. announced on Thursday that it will recall 2.55 million vehicles because of an engine defect. In the affected cars, have a defective sensor that could lead to a short circuit that can stop the engine. The company, which already has taken into fiscal account the nearly $150 million it would cost to repair the cars, counts 700,000 of the affected cars in North America. The recall - the second-biggest ever in Japan - affects many models built from 1998 to 2003, including U.S. versions of the Altima sedan and 350Z.
Is a defective sensor really that big of a deal? Sounds like it could be easily repaired.
Still good to see the Japanese automakers are only human. By the way, Toyota has a huge problem with engine sludge, and Honda is having reliability issues with their automatic transaxles. :zap:
cvp33 10-31-2003, 06:36 PM It's a big deal when it takes you 5 years to react and costs you $150 Million. :D
1966_GTO_ 10-31-2003, 11:18 PM I try to respect Japanese manufacturers and most of them spawn great automobiles here in the States but it's hard to have respect with problems like this circulating. Just gotta love domestics...
scottknight 11-02-2003, 12:17 AM Yeah, because domestic automakers have never made a car like the Pinto or Crown Victoria or Chevy Truck that spontaneously combusted in a crash....or Fieros that caught fire at random....or SUVs with tread separation problems....or...
No manufacturer is immune from these kinds of things. As production schedules, design cycles and costs are pushed harder and harder, Really Bad Things can happen. In the grand scheme of things, a car that quits running is usually an inconvenience, and rarely life threatening. But, they will get quite a black eye out of something like this...and it is fun for people like us because we like to see the 'other guy' do something wrong :laughbounce:
Gaijin 11-02-2003, 04:40 AM Agreed, import or domestic all auto maunfacturer's have had their share of troubles like these.
cvp33 11-02-2003, 09:12 AM I post because I care. :D :P
Seriously though. The "average joe" still believes that Japanese quality has it all over the domestics, so I just love it when they screw up. I love the Japanese cars, especially Japanese recalls, Japanese over-stated HP ratings, etc.
:D
scottknight 11-02-2003, 01:46 PM Just to add a little more, I have become somewhat of a closet BMW fan in the last few years, namely because of the M3 and M5. Everything seems great with their cars for years and years until BAM! right out of nowhere the 745i is such an electronic nightmare that they seem posessed, they have X5's burning to the ground regularly and 3-series cars that are spitting cranks out like watermelon seeds. So much for German engineering
cvp33 11-03-2003, 09:55 PM And for all the Honda lovers out there............
Honda Motor Co. is recalling nearly 652,000 sedans, minivans and sport utility vehicles because of a defect that has caused vehicles to roll away even when they're in park and the key has been removed.
The National Highway Safety Administration said Monday it has records of four injuries, 28 crashes and 169 complaints about the defect, which is caused by excessive wear in the ignition switch. In at least one case, a rolling SUV caused a multi-vehicle accident.
Affected vehicles are the 2002 CR-V SUV, the 1997-99 Acura CL and 1999 Acura TL sedans, the 1999 Odyssey minivan and the 1998-99 Accord sedan and coupe. A total of 651,989 vehicles are involved in the recall.
Honda says consumers should use the parking brake until the company repairs the vehicles.
This is the second time in a year that Honda has recalled the 2002 CR-V. In July, Honda recalled 247,019 CR-Vs because excessive corrosion was preventing the automatic transmission from shifting into park.
Tails 11-03-2003, 10:46 PM Bad week for the island
:laughbounce: :laughbounce: :laughbounce: :laughbounce:
CoolBlu04 11-04-2003, 11:45 PM I'm curious - do these Japanese recalls get the national headlines in the US that surely come when an American maker has a similar problem? Seems to me, our media is really happy to report a recall by one of the "Big Three", but not so much one of the Euro or Japanese makers. Maybe it's just my imagination.
Gaijin 11-06-2003, 05:56 AM No, I see them all make the news.
