: Anyone else like the new VE Ute?
Orbit Orange 08-26-2007, 12:54 AM Anyone else have any thoughts? I already know mechanic58's response as I seem to remember him saying to visit his house in my El Camino I'd have to park out back. lol
I'm mixing it up with some haters over at GMInsideNews. There seem to be way more fans than detractors though.
If you do like it, would you be in the market for an American version?
Check it out at Holden. http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/

its very nice, but can anyone see the very large possibility of an el camino rebadge for chevy? i have a good feeling that GM will do it
mechanic58 08-26-2007, 09:58 PM The El Camino has always had a redneck stereotype attached to it, GM knows that...and there is NO WAY IN HELL they'll ever market that car again, so you might as well forget that Andy....lol.
Orbit Orange 08-26-2007, 10:20 PM Don't be so quick as to discount its comeback. There are strong rumblings inside GM to bring it here, including comments from Lutz stating if it would come it would probably not be a Chevy.
And about the redneck image. It doesn't get more redneck at Chevy than that stupid song by JC Mellencamp and pushing the Silverado. To me it's image is less redneck than that. Whatever the case if it comes here it will be a niche market vehicle, much like the GTO.
And after I get my LS3 GMC Ute Sport in an outrageous orange color, I'm going to travel out to Nevada and park right in front of mechanics house. ;)

lol dude i wasn't saying i want that to happen, i just have a feeling GM will do it. my fear is i believe GM is going to slack off a bit on high performance cars and may end up rebadging a lot of holdens cars instead of building them from the ground up; and i dont consider the el camino anymore redneck then a firebird
mechanic58 08-27-2007, 07:48 AM Never gonna happen, you guys are living a fairy tale. lol.
Nocturn 08-27-2007, 05:46 PM I imagine it coming over as a GMC actually, but thats not to say GM won't **** it up and make 499034 different versions of it under every brand.
Although I could see it being a Hummer actually....Lift it a bit, more of a buggy look...might be cool.
I've been wanting a new camino for a long time since I refuse...REFUSE to buy any sort of truck or SUV.

ahh so this is the hybrid for you huh? well to place it under GMC or hummer wouldn't they have to modify the suspension then to back it up to do some kind of offroading?

For a hummer probably, but not for a GMC, look at the Arcadia, how much off roading is IT going to do with its FWD V6....yeah...not much. Even then its no more different then what they do with the Z71 version of the trucks, fit in some stiffer springers, and poof, instant lift.

ahh good point, well with a car like that and seeing how much effort GM puts to make some cosmetic changes to have the car fit the divison, i say if they do bring this car rebadged for GMC or hummer, i have a good feeling it won't get good reviews because of its euro look. and i hate to see them just rebadge it cause it looks like it will just become a habit of just taking holdens cars and not putting effort in making new vehicles.
Nocturn 08-27-2007, 09:51 PM Well they are to an extent doing just that. Though the idea is to do that until the holden designed platform is ready to be manufactured here.
mechanic58 08-27-2007, 10:08 PM READ MY LIPS....THERE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE AN EL CAMINO-LIKE VEHICLE FOR SALE, NEW, IN THIS COUNTRY. Period. Christ you guys are dense.

dude you make it sound like we want that to happen, i dont cause i think it will strictly on the premise that it will show lazy GM is actually building a car in general from the ground up; they should be trying to show they re-badging is a thing of the past. and well i feel it will happen if GM gets that desperate in trying to bring out a newer vehicle, and if it does happen... hope your words were soft cause you just might have to eat them later lol

Care to place a wager on that one?
andyx181x 08-28-2007, 09:10 AM Care to place a wager on that one?
LOL I was thinking about that, hmm lets see if there is steel in your words
mechanic58 08-28-2007, 09:18 PM Never gonna happen. Main reason: Cost. NO ONE is going to pay that much for a redneck stereotyped 2-seated truck-like vehicle. GM knows that. DUH. I'll even go so far as to say that if they GAVE ME one and I had to keep it...I would tell em to stick it in their ass. Them things are uglier than a bag of ****s and totally not functional. I bet they don't have an 800lb payload rating.
Orbit Orange 08-28-2007, 09:46 PM I ask again, amid all your bluster, care to place a bet on your statement?
There is nothing MORE redneck from GM than a Sierra or Silverado. They can't out-redneck the full-size trucks what with Mellancamp droning on in that lame song of his. They(Utes) do have function, just not that of a full size truck. Looks is subjective and with the price of gas increasing every year and the government butting in with all their fuel economy standards there is a GOOD chance that these will be making their way here soon.
So what's the wager? If you're that confident then it should be easy pickins' from me. Game? It doesn't even have to be monetary although I don't object. Something even like if I'm wrong I'll put a big pic in my sig that says El Camino's suck. I'd even ask Formula79 to take me off the moderator list if that would suit your fancy. How confident are you?
mechanic58 08-28-2007, 10:46 PM NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN
mechanic58 08-28-2007, 10:46 PM And NO ONE is more confident than ME... ;-) lol.
andyx181x 08-28-2007, 10:56 PM And NO ONE is more confident than ME... ;-) lol.
oh yea? we will see about that, besides the el camino is the perfect part car, just stock it with a lot of beer and watch the new friends come running to you to save the party lol
Orbit Orange 08-29-2007, 05:13 PM So you are saying that you are confident, but not confident enough to wager on a "sure" thing. I understand some people don't like to bet. Claim what you like but talk is cheap as the saying goes. I'm not going to debate the will come here, won't come here any more in this thread as it seems a waste. My offer still stands though.
Back to the topic, I see in a thread over at GMInsideNews that the new Ute does not have side head or curtain airbags. (Kinda hard with a cab frankly) Holden claims to have a system in place in 18 months. This could slow down the Ute coming here although it might not either. Frankly I don't care but a lot of nervous nelly types out there do about all the safety junk. So now I'm thinking G8 for Pontiac, Impala on Zeta for Chevy, and someday the Ute for GMC. All speculation of course, but speculation with some hint of those in-the-know like Bob Lutz.
One last thought to leave with. A lot of people around 2002 were saying the GTO would never come over here. I remember a lot saying it wouldn't happen on the boards I frequented at the time. And some car mags too. We know how that one ended up. :)

sounds all good, but i want to know, what is the GTO returning???? and i really do hope GM makes the effort to make the platform here and make their cars here and not have holden do all the work
Nocturn 08-29-2007, 07:59 PM Well holden is doing all the engineering anyways, but they would be manufactured here eventually.

yea thats fine, but my point is this is holdens designs, im afraid of the lack of effort GM might come to when it comes to bringing holdens cars over here. sure we dont care that our GTOs didn't look like the 60s model, but that can make or break other names if they continue to do that. im hoping at least when they are manufactured here they will change the sheet metal and make the car less holden, and more whatever it is going to
vrbleena 09-03-2007, 06:29 PM lol
I reckon theres a chance....but I dont know your guys (the US) market that well, but for us, utes (u call them trucks) have always been part of the car culture, because country boys and tradies will normally go for a ute. They are big sellers here, and with a 307kW LS2 ute that has a lot less weight over the back wheels like a sedan or coupe, it will be very tail happy. And thats a good thing :D
We do hold the land speed record for the world's fastest production ute/truck :D
salbracht 09-04-2007, 02:09 PM I personally believe there is a difference between a "ute" and a truck. A "ute" is a car frame with a bed. It's fine if you are looking for a carlike ride that can carry more than you could in a trunk, but it doesn't have the tow or load capacity as a truck on a truck frame.
I also understand that most people don't need the tow/load capacity of a truck, and a ute would do them fine. But regardless, I think the comparison between a ute and a truck is apples and oranges.
Orbit Orange 09-06-2007, 08:02 PM Hey all if you like the discussion head on over to GMInsideNews. Branden has started an editorial thread with some good points about the Utes negatives and others are bringing up the positives too. Personally I disagree with a few of his points, (Don't get upset please Branden) but hey all are entitled to their POV. Plus I don't have to worry about being a moderator over there so I can vent a little more.
Besides, think of MarylandSpeed increasing it's consumer base. ;)
LS2weber 09-07-2007, 12:42 PM I like it I think it would make a good car for the track. Hell you could put your tires and jack in the back and swap out at the track. How cool is that.
bluebyu05 09-16-2007, 08:03 AM That is one sweet ride too bad they dont have it hear because that would be in garage and not gto . I emailed holden about bringing it over here but they said to contact gm and if enough interest well we could see it here.

i have a good feeling it will come, i personally have this feeling that GM is going to depend on holdens cars to support their "high performance" line, like why bother making a newer car when they can import holdens cause they already got the hard work done for us.
6806goats 11-13-2007, 08:21 PM I for one hope like heck it does. I had 2 66 El Camino's and wish I still had them. Redneck...hmmmph...and the problem with that is????? LOL. I was in Fremantle in 2003 at Shacks Holden and the guys gave me the grand tour. I'd shop you some of the literature I picked up but it's in the States and I'm..well a little far from there now. But what's kool and I know we won't get this version...is the cab and chassis version. Utility box, camper, etc. Our Aussie friends use the heck out of them. Which reminds me. If any Aussies are reading this is Holden not a good car there? I've been rather proud of owning my GTO/Monaro but it doesn't seem to matter to them and one guy told me, "I thought you were a good bloke until you said that...but I like Fords". What's the deal there. Anyway, I'm hoping the Ute makes it over. Would like the cab and chasis version to put a redneck camper on it. Cedar shingles and all!!!!! Oh Lord...Get a rope. Cheers.
andyx181x 11-30-2007, 09:23 AM oh BTW, its been confirmed that GM is importing the car as a seperate model for the G8
salbracht 11-30-2007, 08:35 PM oh BTW, its been confirmed that GM is importing the car as a seperate model for the G8
Where has it been confirmed? (The internet is funny ... some blogger on a website makes a guess and suddenly it's quoted as a confirmation. I'm looking for a quote from a GM exec talking at a car show, or an official release. Anything short of that would probably still have to be considered rumor.)
EDIT : I'm guessing your confirmation is from pickuptruck.com saying it has been confirmed as the G8 ST (for "Sport Truck") and it will be V8 only starting at $31k. Just me ... I don't think I'm putting much faith in those statements.

I'm with you. I raised the BS flag over at GMInsideNews on that story. I'll say it here too.
