: Is everyone on this board INSANE?
campagnj 11-11-2003, 03:45 PM I've been reading around in these forums and I have come to the conclusion that you're all nuts! I am a second generation GTO lover, owner and enthusiast, and I am all for a new GTO to hit the road asap. But this model that is being touted is sickly looking. In no way does it live up to the GTO legend. This is nothing more than a souped up Grand Am with a GTO emblem and wanna-be hopes of becoming a mustang. This isn't distinguishable from any other rice-burning, weed-whacker- under-the-hood kid's car out there except that this one costs a whole lot more and gets teribble gas mileage! I can't believe you're happy that the price for this thing is in the low to mid $30's! That eliminates teenagers and young twenty-somethings from owning it. And that's the market I would think a Grand Am look-alike would target. This car might be fast, but come on guys, this isn't the 60's any more. Muscle cars were great because you could (in certain parts of the US) use 'em for street racing. Today the best you can do is take it to a quarter mile track; otherwise you risk imprisonment and license suspension! Plus there are a lot more cars on the roads these days...who can speed even if they wanted too? Try outrunning a helicopter chasing you. What I'm saying is, make it fast, but go for looks because these days that's what wins.
I think this is ridiculous. I would never pay that much money just because they stick a GTO emblem on it. It's another hum-drum, no excitement kid's car with a grown up price. You can make it fast...you can make it loud, but that doesn't make it a GTO. I think all manufacturing should stop immediately and go back to the drawing board until you make something eye-catching that will deserve the GTO emblem. If I owned GM, that's exactly what would happen. I mean even the Austrailian rip off they first proclaimed as the new goat, the LS1? It was a rip off of the Firebird/Trans Am, but at least it induced awe in observers. I wish if they were going to make a look-alike it would have been that LS1. This new model is a disgrace and everyone who is so happy about it must be in a nostalgia-induced trance, so happy that SOMETHING is going to be called a GTO that they'll take anything. Sorry guys, but it's a spade...and I'm calling it.
Tails 11-11-2003, 03:51 PM Doesn't look like you have done much research and are just rehashing tired old arguements. I am glad that you will not buy it because it leaves more for those that understand the history of the GTO and what the new one means. See ya in my rear veiw mirror!!
:laughbounce: :laughbounce: :laughbounce: :laughbounce:
campagnj 11-11-2003, 04:11 PM Actually Tails, You'll see a green dot ahead of you that is my fully powered 68(with a lot more speed and power than the new one has got!). But please enlighten me on what aspect of the GTO history is upheld by this new model. It isn't new and different (from existing competition, it doesn't have a 400, it isn't easily customizable, it is outrageously expensive, and it isn't a muscle car. I can see how it lends itself to the GTO label! As far as I can see the new RX-8 is a better buy!
jon_we4 11-11-2003, 04:17 PM Lets put your car on the dyno ... unless its some extreme built big block it aint makin enough power for your smack talking. I also want to meet you at a stop light with my GTO that will have a 427 idling better than your car ever will getting much better gas milage AND with a 520 REAR WHEEL HP.
MILLPOND 11-11-2003, 04:49 PM What I am about to say is something that has been said many times before.
If you dont like the new GTO.......Dont buy it!
I for one am glad it is not like the "old" GTOs. My father has a beautiful GTO when it is sitting there....but one ride in it and you will no why cars have changed.
No matter what ANYONE thinks of the new GTO....it is coming!.....no, scratch that.......it is HERE! Live with it!
BTW.....I would have bought this car even it it said PINTO on it!
Just my thoughts.
Nocturn 11-11-2003, 05:00 PM Obviouslly you don't know what your supposed GTO was, why don't you grow up some more before you make your first or second post here insulting us all because you can't accept the fact that the new GTO is better than your old one.
DANSLS1 11-11-2003, 05:18 PM camp - not only are you missing what the 2004 GTO is (a corvette with a nice interior), you are missing the target market completely. I could care less if they called this car a GTO, a Grand Am plus, or the Pontiac doodie. It is a RWD V8, that I personally like the looks of. It IS expensive enough that not every punk-a$$ kid is gonna be driving one w/ ricer wings and neon on it. It is everything I was looking for in a new car to come out. It excited me enough to buy a new car when financially I'd be a lot better off waiting and driving my 'no-payment' saturn. And if I have kids in a couple of years, there's a back seat for them.
And I am the target market from what I hear - so they must have done it right. They have said over and over that the 'old' GTO fans are not the market for this car (although there are some who get it and like it - more power to them).
Oh and nice coming in and flaming everybody on the board - and then posting an ad to try and sell your bumper - I'm sure it will rush the assistance to your side. (actually, we're all pretty decent people here - so most probably won't hold your ignorance against you).
Commissar 11-11-2003, 05:42 PM "I've been reading around in these forums"
Obviously not that much or you would have seen that all you people are over at ultimategto.com and that your point has been brought up several hundred times about a year ago.
Another thing..... Look at the '64 GTO. What was so special about that? Wasn't it just a normal everyday car with a big engine? Lets look further.... The Firebird and the GTO both had the 400 and 455, so why is it so dissapointing to see the LS1 that the Firebird and Camaro had in the GTO?
campagnj 11-11-2003, 05:44 PM I knew when I made this post that I would get a lot of backlash...seeing how everyone on this board is gaga over the new turbo Grand Prix called a GTO. Firstly, anyone who has restored a GTO has made it better than the factory did. I have a 455 in mine and it has a custom cam, etc., etc. I didn't post my comments to brag. I didn't build it to race, I built it to drive and quite frankly I would NEVER street race it because it is an expensive classic. That's the beauty of a 68- It's beautiful
Although I will say that all the info I've seen on this site, and in magazines shows me that the new GTO is no killer compared to later 60's models including the 68 which had 360hp (HO) and ran high 13s. However here is the real point. THE REAL POINT:
The new model looks like every Grand Prix since 1999! It has a stunningly indistinguishable look! from 100 yards it could be a Grand Am! It has no visual dimension to it at all! When a GTO drives by, teenage boys should have to pick up their jaws from the ground and wipe the drool away. That's the awe inspired by GTOs from 64 to 70. But this one has teenage boys saying (if they notice the car), "Huh, is that the new Grand Prix?"
GTOs inspired awe and this one doesn't. I don't care if it is the fastest car ever made. Paint it champagne color, lose the spoiler and you've got yourself a very expensive ho-hum car that I probably wouldn't even take a second look at. You guys don't get it...it's not all about specs - especially in a place like I live (NJ) where you can't even race off the line from a light because the traffic is stuck 20 feet in front of you. And look at the price! The only people who can afford this thing need something that can hold a car seat, or are so far into a mid-life crisis that this thing will blow off their toupe. For all of this power that you can't use on today's roads, you're going to pay $10-$15k more than the Grand Prix for the same look. You're buying the GTO name. Just buy a Grand Prix for $22k and put the GTO emblem on it. Who's gonna know the difference when you're sitting in traffic? Believe me, the only people who are going to take note of this generic sports coupe is the person stuck behind you in traffic. Drive a 64-70...and the traffic parts for you. That's what I'm saying. In fact that is my new term for the 04 GTO- I'll call it the GSC, Generic Sports Coupe. Scream at me if you like, but the new GTO is HERE and it IS GENERIC.
Sales will tell the true story. The old GTOs were best sellers. Look at the PT Cruiser - it isn't fast but it's got a cool look and it's one of the best selling cars for 3 years straight. This car will fail and give the GTO name a dent because they went for power in an economy world instead of looks. If the new GTO is better than the old ones, it's only on a spec sheet. In the real world cool rules and you've got generic. It won't sell because their target market 27 to 45ers don't want to go fast. they want to look cool. Mark this page and see if I'm not right in a year.

Exactly.
You are not well informed.
So you want to tell us that from the side you can tell the difference between a '68 Tempest and a '68 GTO from 100 yards.
Also, name me one thing that your '68 GTO will do better than a '04 GTO?
You mentioned that the '04 GTO gets terrible gas mileage.
The '04 GTO gets better gas mileage in the city than yours does on the highway.
In fact, it probably gets 2 times the highway mileage your's does.
Interior room, emissions, handling, is it better?
What exactly does your GTO do better than the '04?
kbaba 11-11-2003, 06:12 PM Here we go again...where do these people come from? I realize that this is an open forum, but honestly, it was set up to "celebrate" a new car. What the hell is so holy about GTO - I can't imagine anyone that is, or will be, purchasing an '04 GTO going into an Old Goat, excuse me, classic forum and trashing their rides.
BTW rschumacherfan1, I like the Pontiac doodie, then the "Judge" version could be called the heavy doodie.
Seriously, if you want to tinker in your garage or hire someone to tinker for you - have at it - there's plenty of old rusted hulks to go around.
Go whine somewhere else!
1966_GTO_ 11-11-2003, 06:39 PM Can someone please close this thread... It should've been done already...
Why can't there be more people who like both the old GTOs and the new one... It wasn't erasy, but I learned to do so...
Tails 11-11-2003, 06:52 PM He was right about one thing....we are all insane!!!
