I've been reading some of the flaming posts by people who don't think the new GTO is what it should be (the latest being campagnj). I've been on this site for a while now but haven't posted much.
Let me tell you why I like this car. It doesn't have to be like the old GTO, it doesn't have to have any relationship to the old GTO other than good horsepower (does the imported LeMans from Korea ring a bell?) If I wanted a car with crappy brakes, marginal handling, wind noise, rattles, then I would buy a classic (read on). They don't build'em the way they used to and I say "Thank God!". Waiting for the car to warm up on a cold morning (if it started), who needs it?
The GTO is built in Australia buy a company that knows how to build cars. If Holden had dealerships here and they sold the Monaro here I'd be buying one of those! Does it look like a Grand Am, sure it does. Its called corporate image. Look at all the Pontiacs in the 60's. You could tell it was a Pontiac because it had a split grill.
I like all kinds of cars. I think Nissan makes a very good vehicle in the 350Z and the G35. The C5 Corvette is a great vehicle.
Why am I saying all of this? This comes from a guy who is 42, has had Japanese imports, German imports, F bodies and hot rods all my life. I love them all!
I currently have a '62 Chevy two door Bel Air "bubbletop" sitting in my garage with an air ride suspension, 20" wheels, disk brakes and a 502hp 502ci motor under the hood. Its black with a red interior and is gorgeous. Will it drive like a new car? Hell no, and its not supposed to. Its supposed to be like a 60's hot rod but has modern technology for safety.
People who live in the past and want to stay there, should. Which really confuses me because they still want to be part of this "Internet thing". True car guys (like myself) love all kinds of cars. Hell, I even like some of the ricers that the young kids put together. If you're a true car guy, you can tell quality and craftsmanship in any type of car you look at, whether its from the factory or something someone put together.
Wow, finally got that off my chest! :D
Edit: By the way, I forgot to add, I will be purchasing an '05 GTO (have to get current driver paid for this year).
