As the saying goes, "It's all over but the crying." Edmunds is reporting that their source inside General Motors has let slip that the Pontiac brand will officially be eliminated. The announcement is expected to be made next Monday as a part of a more thorough reorganization of the struggling automaker.

General Motors PR rep Tom Wilkinson told Edmunds that he could not share any information but that media should keep an eye on the company's news website for updates.

Rumors have circulated since the initial stages of GM's viability plan that both Pontiac and GMC would be cut and it looks like the Pontiac rumors may finally be true - despite GM's continued insistence that the brand is safe.

Pontiac is well-known as the most exciting of GM's brands with cars like the GTO, Firebird, Grand Prix (GTP) and now the G8 achieving iconic status.

The loss of the brand might be a necessary evil for General Motors but it could also come back to haunt them if another manufacturer purchased the name.

If true (although GM has come out with a statement denying it) I am going to be terribly distraught and very may well be looking elsewhere than GM for future car purchases unfortunately. It's a sad situation for us Pontiac fans. :(

Reports of Pontiac's death have been greatly exaggerated. ;-)

Here's the official statement from Pontiac :

FOR RELEASE: 2009-04-24

Pontiac Statement Re: Media Speculation

Contrary to media speculation, General Motors has not announced any changes to its long-term viability plan or to the future status of any of its brands. GM is continuing to review its restructuring plan to go further and faster and best ensure its future success. Additional information will be released as any decisions are finalized.

I'm hoping against hope that it is true. But if memory serves me correct they did the same thing earlier talking about Saturn, Hummer and Saab. Funny but the dealer that we bought our G8 GT from actually forwarded us that exact statement from GM by e-mail. Why exactly they would do that I'm not sure. I fired off another of the many e-mails I've sent Pontiac recently and I pretty much got the same standard response. I almost don't want Monday to come as I think we'll find out what the deal is then. :(

If they do go I would hope they would be bought out by an American company. I think I would die inside if they were sold to a Chinese, Korean or Indian company. Seeing 3000 dollar deathbox Indian micro cars sold under the Pontiac name would be the equivalent of torturing my soul. :( Either US ownership or dignified death.

Okay ... NOW it's official. Pontiac phased out by end of 2010.

Sad. Truly, truly sad.

Yep my next purchase will be Chrysler or Ford. They cast me out I cast them out. GM is in a downward spiral and won't come out of this. They are also arrogant enough to believe most of us will flock to Buick or Chevy, are they in for a rude awakening. A sad day and the worst of my automotive hobby life. My son will never know the joy of purchasing a new Pontiac. Let's see who wants to court my $$$ more, Ford or Chrysler. :(

Nothing like being orphaned, GM can kiss my @ss. Oh Pontiac hasn't lived up to their trademark, GM says. Whatever, like they have. It just goes to show you that how bad things are. Once again bad choices. Well when the time comes, guess I'll jump to another auto maker too.

I saved up for almost two years for a down payment on the new Camaro...what a waste. My local Chevy dealership says they won't be getting any. I know they made them...who wants to find out where they are and help me steal a couple?

Well since we will be owning 60% of Government Motors, maybe we should start a petition to bring back Pontiac.

Our best petition is to take our next new car purchase elsewhere than GM unfortunately. :(
