This is a interesting story but I'll have to see it to believe it.
If its true, this is BS with the limited production. Heres the link

It's false. There is no way that GM is offering a cop version of the GTO. They barely had enough time to get them out as it is.

This is very likely true and there isn't anything that keeps them from buying a standard GTO. The Texas DPS was doing this back in the 80's and even installed superchargers on some of their Mustangs back then. Not a Ford supported option.

OK I'll throw it up for the heck of it.

Here's my reasons.

1. This was a post on another message board a "rumor". If I see this posted as a bit of news somewhere I will retract my flag.

2. With only 18,000 to sell GM is not going to cut Texas a deal and sell these for some great bargain basement price when they can gouge the consumer first.

3. Why would texas pay a high price for pursuit vehicles when most states are crunched for cash?
Doesn't make much dollars and sense really. ;)

4. The radio wave travels faster than any vehicle anyway, buying a Crown Vic or Impala would just make more sense. And save money.

5. I think this is one of those Tall Texas tales.

Remember this isn't aimed at you 3 that posted before this just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing what you know. :D

I think it is bogus but I can see it happening for 2005. I think the new Goat would make a pretty cool cop car.

Not picking a fight, just some things to think about.

as for 3, I can guarantee that the DPSs fleet of Z28 pursuit vehicles are not all 2002s so some of the cars are probably starting to become maintenance headaches that cost more than a new vehicle. Also, only other option would be Mustang Cobra and you can't even think about putting a suspect in the back of a Mustang (or a Z/28 for that matter).

On point 4 this is the highway patrol in Texas. Large areas with nothing where just one officer is on duty with the next nearest car 40 miles away in the next county. Radio still helps but you have to bounce through more than one dispatcher to use local authorities and they can still be miles away. Also, they are working major highways where 70 is the speed limit so to be grossly over your doing 85 to 90.
You need a car that you can pull down get turned around and close the huge gap the speeder has created. Lastly, pursuit is not the main reason for these cars but deterence. These vehicles have a tendency to be assigned to areas were speeding has increased to above average and they put these cars on the road where they can be seen. If you were thinking of running would you really be afraid of an Impala. A high speed pursuit vehicle patrolling your area has a tendency to get and hold peoples attention. Especially when they see it 3 times in a week and you know there are not a lot of them around.

Generally police forces use this type of vehicle as a high visibility highway patrol car. They make appearances at public relations and media events, sit at high accident and speed zones and generally let the public know that they are around and that speeding is bad. I dont think they'll be trying to squeeze anyone in the back of it.

Police in South Australia use for general patrol cars (fleet cars) Police Pack V6 3800 Commodore 4DR Executives with airbags, beefed suspensions (FE2) and wider steel wheels with the "Utility's Hubcaps"

There are some cars that are the Commodore SS LS1 (4DR) with above packages included and these are used for "highway patrol" work.

Police cars do 40000-50000 Km or a maximum of 2 years before being sold at Public Auction. They do the 40 K to 50 K in approx 9 months to 1 year.

As I said in that thread, or really didn't but the guy who posted it hates the new car. There is no way Texes is going to spend that kind of money on a police specialty car.

I know you're not. :)

In fact your points are very valid. I just think GTO's are not the thing for the Texas Highway Patrol.

Sure would make a great pursuit vehicle but moneywise I just don't think it would be in their best interest. I'll stick with my nothings faster than the radio wave and it being too much of a hassle to get a criminal into the back seat. It just doesn't make much sense.

If I see the story elsewhere I'll gladly flipflop my view. I just think this is a rumor someone has cooked up to grab some attention.

I agree with your points on the attention grabbing aspect. :woot:

As a sidenote I am also hoping this is false as it will drive up the price of the GTO making it less attainable and I just don't like the thought of a GTO dressed up in black and white with lightbars and all the other stuff. The GTO is a performance car not a "workhorse" like say an Impala or Crown Vic. ;)

Yeah So far i have all the lights and sirens already bought but the problem is that i dont have the vehicle to install them on.

As soon as I get all my lights on this car will look like a christmas tree when everythings is on, and oh yeah people will move when they see a silver car coming up on them at about 100mph with flashing red and blues and a 200w siren

:D

oh yeah and i would never ever use them when i dont need them ;)

uhhh its texas, not texes. I doubt it will happen not for awhile anyways. DPS's have always gone with their main brand, either chevy or ford, has been since the 50's or so and I doubt all of the sudden their gunna go oh hey lets just change everything. The DPS is a beaurcacy..change isn't something it does.
