: Somebody talk me out of this....

It's obvious that waiting for an awesome car sucks, but lately I've been reconsidering my decision to buy a GTO. I ordered one on Sept. 12th and recevied my "official" letter from Bob 2 days ago. Still no TPW though. I'm in no hurry to get my goat for Iowa's winter but come spring I'll be ready.

Which brings me to my dilemma. I've been looking at the RX8 and TONS of other cars but I love the RX8's styling and originality. Sure the GTO will hand it's ass to it, but let's be real, a Z06 or even an STi will hand the GTO it's ass unmodified. And the STi is another awesome FUGLY car that I considered in the same price range. My dealer that sells Pontiac also happens to sell Mazda AND Subaru.

Sure, I'll get laid in any of the cars, but I think that a girl won't know the difference between a GTO and a Grand Am - which is FINE, who cares what they think, just making a point. At some point you have to ask yourself "What matters more, looks or power?"

Somebody talk me out of the RX8............ or talk me into it.... ;)

No problem, DON'T DO IT!!!!!

I've driven the RX-8 at my dealership, both the auto and the 6-spd. The car looks pretty cool, but that's about it! The back seat is a complete joke unless you're 3' tall. Acceleration is...... well there is no acceleration. The only power comes from winding the little rotarty over 6500 rpm's. And if you don't like 6-spds then you're really gonna hate it cause the auto has a much lower hp rating than the stick. We have bought 4 back from customers due to the Mazda power rating blunder. If this car is so great why do we have 27 sitting on our lot? By the way we're the #1 Mazda dealer in Arizona.

Let's face it, do you really want to spend $33-35k on a Mazda?? :pain:

Believe me you'll be much happier waiting a bit for your Goat!!!

Thanks Howie,
My 24 year old step-son is seriously looking at the RX8. I have been trying to convince him otherwise. I don't know how successful I will be as his response is always..."But it looks so cool"....and he loves the suicide doors. Sometimes I have no hope for the young....

I don't get it and don't understand why anyone would consider a gutless Rx8 over a GTO. Power over looks anyday!

I forgot to mention that I have a crotch rocket and have raced them the past 2 years. No car under 100,000 dollars can match the speed/performance of a rocket. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but it's still true nonetheless. So speed isn't a priority here, neither is power... but don't get me wrong, it's ALWAYS nice to have both.

Yeah, if only the RX8 had about 100 more ponies/torque, then I'd get it hands down. The GTO, I'm sure, is a power monster but it's still slower than the uglier STi and Evo - so if we want bragging rights, the GTO is not the best option unless you plan on modding to hell and back - I don't.

I'll be one of those "squids" that gets a nice shiny GTO ........ and leaves it bone stock. I plan on giving this car to my son someday....... like in 25 years or so. I want her to last so I don't wanna slap a supercharger on there and roast the V8 to soon.

But thanks for the comments! I'll stick with the GTO........

PS- Thanks for the inside dealer scoop on the RX8 Howie.......... our local dealer has like 12 of them on the lot...... and they've been there since early september.

Something really bothers me... Evryone keeps complaining that the new GTO does not look like anything special. Ok that's fine.. But these peple either forget or don't realize that the old GTO's were the same way. The GTO is known to be a monster engine stuffed into an unassuming car. So please no more posts saying that the gto isn't as glitzy as the old - THE OLD WAS NOT GLITZY EITHER.

BTW I am anxiously awaiting my Torrid Red with red interior

I am glad it is not a GLITZY car. I love the fact that no one thinks you have anything special. Besides, I have found at GLITZY gets just one thing.....STOLEN!

I honestly have to reconsider now. If you can please verify that I can get laid in a GTO, Subaru or the RX8. My sole reason for buying the GTO was to ensure sexual intercourse. I was led to believe that ONLY the GTO could provide this guarantee. I hate being misled by sleazy sales people. :D

Are you sure that wasn't a PERSONAL guarantee from your sleazy sales person? I just hope it was a chick!

I did a comparison on another board between the EV0,STi, and GTO. They are all the same basic price but the GTO has 50 more HP and 65 more TQ then the STi, and 80/95 more then the Ev0...but they only weigh 3127, to the GTO's 3725. But the other two are secan bread boxes.

The RX8 on the other hand is a joke, you should be made fun of for even thinking about comparing the to.

Pontiac GTO > Mazda RX8

CVP33,
I don't know... you drive THE coolest car on the road...it does things to a guy. I'm just glad I'll have one of my own so I don't do anything I'll regret later!

edge929, You have to do what ever will makes you happy. Not just in the short term but in the long term as well.

I have been waiting about a year for this car. Yes it has been hard. There have been a lot of cars I told myself I would settle for. I am just glad I didnt.

But over all...it is about what you want....not us.

Nice objective comment MILLPOND - posting on a GTO board I'm bound to get pro-GTO opinions like I assumed, but I know everyone has their 2 cents.

Why do people buy sports cars? The way I see it, there's only 2 reasons, 1) for other people to envy you and/or 2) to get your adrenaline fix. Sure it's probably a guy thing to always "know" you have some serious power if you ever need it but in my situation, I get more than enough adrenaline from my rocket. So it comes down to priorities! Does the GTO suit ME?

I've always wanted a true muscle car, but didn't want the problems they came with. If I knew they were for SURE going to release the Judge, I'd wait for that and hopefully a little bit better styling on her.

I do have until March/April to decide, so flame away!

Go Goat! :D

Just another thought, I would think repair costs on the GTO would be lower than the Mazda in the long run. Foreign makes generally (not always) have a higher repair cost price for parts. Maybe Howie could verify this as he has some insight on the Mazda's.

As for passing it on to your son someday all I can recommend is the GTO again. Having a very young son of my own I look forward to him learning to drive and taking the keys from my GTO someday. He already knows the 3 most important letters in the alphabet .... GTO!!! :D

I'd go GTO! I hear those Mazda rotary engines can break with high rpm abuse... I like the Mazda 6... too bad it doesn't come with 100 more donkey power...

The Rx8 isn't all that with style. If you want muscle and style, and a car with no back seat like the Rx8, a Corvette is the best option... but it costs a buttload more. I think the GTO looks kinda Euro, but it looks sweet to me! My only gripe is the single sided duals... but other than that, this car has tons inside of it!

Did you read Motor Trend's review of it??? :woot: I loved this car before reading it, but after reading it I am a changed man... I absolutely NEED this car!!!

edge929, I can tell you why I want the GTO. There is nothing like the feeling a powerful car can give you. It almost changes your mind set. I know the GTO will be fun to drive. To me that is what is important. Sure there may be cars that are faster. Sure there may be cars that are better looking. It is the feeling you get when you sit in the car that makes all the difference.
I got to sit in the GTO a while back and I must say, I fell in love with it. The way the seat felt. The way everything was at your finger tips. I knew it was the car for me. I guess what I am trying to say is, if you are a car guy like me then you have a true passion for cars. If you dont feel that passion for the GTO, then maybe it is not for you.

BTW....I know all about the sport bike feeling. I own a 2001 GSXR 750.

If you plan to hand the car down pick the GTO. You don't want to hand an RX8 down after 20 years. Who would even keep one that long?
