If you guessed the GTO, then you guessed wrong. Motor Trend gave the 2004 Car of the Year award to the Toyota Prius hybrid car.

This thing beat out 25 other vehicles, including the GTO.

Article (http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/alternative/112_031120_coy/)

A quick quote from the article:

"We realize the selection of a hybrid vehicle is going to stir controversy, but we believe the performance, engineering advancements, and overall significance of the Toyota Prius merits the distinction of Motor Trend's Car of the Year," said Kevin Smith, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend.

I don't agree with the decision myself, but that is just me. I thought the GTO would take it.

If you read the 3 categories and judging - I think the GTO would lose heavily in 2 of the 3. I think the significance of the new GTO would be lowered - specifically based on the limited production. Also I think the superiority category has issues due to the fact that there really isn't anything like the GTO on the market right now. I would guess if most of us are as happy with this car once we get it as we are anticipating it, maybe the 2005 model might make it.

Motor Trend is nuts!

Their name is Motor Trend, not Weedwhacker Hybrid Slug Engine Trend.

I'm to the point where all this Car of the Year stuff is just crap anymore. Think anyone will even remember the name Prius in 15 to 20 years?

We all know what the Car of the Year is! :D

Shame on you Motor Trend. :flush:

Put your head in the sand if you want, but they've had like 10,000+ pre-orders for the Prius. Unfortunately, there are many more people who care more about gas mileage than those that care about 1/4 mile times.

I'm not surprised by this award.

What's a Prius? ;)

Anyone remember the Pinto? This car was to revolutionize the small car market back in 1971. I was just reading through the article in a 1970 Motor Trend!! Boy they sure loved it and thought it was great. Great gas mileage too!

The times change but MT just seems to keep repeating history.

Davbo, your right, I'm not surprised either, just extremely disappointed with MT. Hey Motor Trend :microwave:

This just in! Sports Illustrated follows Motor Trend's lead and picks Comrade Kasparov, Russian Chess wiz, as Sportsman of the Year!

Really, isn't MT the home of the quarterly 1000hp twin turbo Viper test? I'm gonna guess that no one on the staff actually likes driving a Prius nor will any actually buy one. Seems like a bunch of lip-service, like the way a couple of years ago, when they gave Jethro Tull "Album of the Year" for a record that nobody bought or remembers because they forgot to honor them when they actually were good.

Maybe Toyota will have those bigass rear window stickers made that announce it as CoY like the old Renault Alliance did when it won

I don't think Motor Trend was bought off. However, I do think they turned COY into a popularity contest. You can't argue with the number of tree huggers who have pre-ordered this car. The mistake MT made is that none of those people read MT or car magazines in general. :zap:

Now there's the truth NO DOUBT! :)

The bunch that preorders this turd will only reference Consumer Reports when it comes to vehicles anyway! Why should MT even care what they think. It's called alienating the readership and MT better not go down that road.

For what it's worth (which is absolutely nothing, really) I was switching channels and they showed Cameron Diaz is driving one on celebrity uncensored. Hmm - maybe that's how it won...

I have quit reading MT because of their dilike of American vehicles. They do not have a clue about what is a good car. They have become another Automobile magazine clone.
