Yes, the GTO requires 92 octane.

According to Road and Track (issue Dec 2003) page 81., the GTO required premium unleaded, 91 pump octane.

I've never actually seen 91 octane premium fuel. It's usually 93 or the off brands are 92.

Anyways, 92 is what Pontiac recommends: http://media.gm.com/division/2004_prodinfo.../gto/specs.html (http://media.gm.com/division/2004_prodinfo/pontiac/gto/specs.html)

For what it's worth, this link still lists the tires as 225's.

In California the highest you can get is 91 octane.

The PCM can be changed to 89.

Geez, that must suck for you California guys. Everything but the cheapest gas here is 93.

Got a lot of choices in Ohio:

Most stations sell 87, 89, 93.
Sunoco just dropped 86, still has 87, 89, 92, 94.
Citgo has a 90.
Some Marathons have a race gas pump, I think it's right around 100.

My SVT Contour specifies 91, and yea, never seen it except out west.

In Iowa we have 87, 89, and mainly 91 - some gas stations (BP/Amoco) have 92 and once in a while you'll come across 93 if you win the lottery. Our 89 has corn-fuel (ethanol) - I'll stick with 92 please.

Sunoco here in New York just dropped 94. It's now 87, 89, 91(new), and Ultra 93. It used to be 87, 89, 93, and Ultra 94.

I hate this trend. California already has ethanol in all of our fuel to reduce emissions. This also has another effect, its makes gasoline an even more powerful solvent than it was before. With ethonol, rubber will break down quicker and fuel filters get clogged more. (they recommend you change it twice a year, I've had to change mine twice so far as it was a cause of problems.) :flush:

Actually according to Gm's GTO Dealer's brochure (sp?) they reccomend premium fuel but "the GTo can run on reg. or mid-grade but acceleration will be reduced" or something to that effect.

yeah obviousely it will retard timing and just be a pooch.

The GM pcm for LS1s has duel-fuel modes. The computer uses MAF/IAT vs. 02 readings to determine what fuel you are using. Unfortunately a couple things seem to not work to the enthusiast's advantage. 1) Though the computer is supposed to "prefer" to be in the Premium fuel mode and automatically switch back, we've found several 2000+ C5s that are "stuck" in the alternate fuel mode and have to have their brains wiped to get back to normal. 2) Octane booster, fuel inj cleaner, methanol, and many other additives WILL trigger the alternate fuel mode....so those guys dumpin some 104+ in their tanks are shooting themselves in the foot

To me, that's actually good news about what Sunoco is doing in NY. I'd buy the 91 all the time if it was priced appropriately (a few cents cheaper than the Amoco 93).

Yes you can run a lower octane fuel, but the PCM will back down the timing to off set any detanation (spark know) that may occur. Running anything over the recommened fuel will do nothing for performance.

No thats what pissed me off. They didn't change the prices. I can get 93 at Mobil for the same price as Sunoco 91.

if you put any less than 89 in it, the car will make a distinct PINGING noise. NOT GOOD. 89 or better.

i will only put 91 in it, the highest i can get out here in CA. I will not put any thing else in it!

Do you have California Emmissions Control? Would this cut performance? Or are all 18,000 GTO's alike as far as emmissions? I wounder...
