I voted for the Commodore. My GTO needs a stable mate. :D

Closest thing in the list is the Ute but I reckon the Crewman would go great over there.

I voted adventra, 4wd, handles like a rwd, high ground clearance, sexy, and plenty of space.

Is it me or when everyone else reads a post from our Aussie friends do you use an Australian accent in your head. :P

It's probably just me.

I think its just you mate. Ive just finished watching a funny british movie and have started speaking with a british accent (dont know why). I highly recommend the movie About a boy starring Hugh Grant. Yeah, Aussie accent is rare in Sydney, especially in the more affluent suburbs, closer to the city or any multicultural hubs.

Thanks for the spelling zAp! :D

I kind of knew about the Foster's thing too, I just couldn't think of any other Aussie beer brand. That's all we ever see over here.

So I take it Foster's is swill? Never tried one I'll take your word for it! :)

I voted for the Caprice mainly because GM needs to reinvent the Caprice and no better way than to import them as is.

Lets face it, GM lost a HUGE market share when they killed the Caprice sedan and wagon /Impala SS (the real one) not only in the civilian market but also the police market. Every police dept in the country used and loved the caprice. The Caprice could catch and outrun the "pony" cars in its era. Millpond can attest to this. Now they are forced to run with either a Ford P.I. :jumpon: or front drive impala, taurus, or inprepid.

I really think the Ute (El Camino) will be the next Holden to make it across the pond. Till the Camaro is reborn Chevy is going to need something to fill the void. A Chevelle derived from the Monaro is imposible as tha factory is a full capacity now cranking out Monaros & GTO's. And the SSR isn't gonna cut it, especially at the price of $40k. If the Ute is made somewhere else (I think it is) it would make perfect sense. Besides if Camaro does return in 07, I don't think the 2 vehicles would compete too much with each other either. Wouldn't it also be exempt from the gas tax too if it's classed as a truck?

I'm with Howie!

I voted Ute. Rebadge it here as The El Camino SS!

Problem is I don't see it happening until the SSR dies. (Hopefully soon!) Although it looks cool and retro, the SSR is an overpriced, overweight, overhyped, underpowered, limited appeal 2 seater, with no real everyday usuable hauling space, SUV underpinned, hunk of metal.

I could go on and on about the SSR's shortcomings but it would get tiring. A 30 grand El Camino SS would make tons of more sense as well as outsell the SSR into the dust.

And as Howie said it could get by as a light truck possibly, skirting the gas guzzler tax.

Hear that Chevy, dump the SSR and bring over the Ute as the new Elky SS!

I think if any Holden were to go anytime soon, it would definitely be the ute. The Commodore sedan will never be imported as it would be too much volume (as it would be a mainstream car). I think the next generation Commodore sedan will actually be built in America but. The only Holden to be export will be low volume niches that wouldn't make a lot of sense to make in the U.S.. The Adventra or the Crewman Cross 8 are also both a good chance I think. But it is the ute and the name 'El Camino' that keep coming up. As soon as they sort out the free trade agreement (which sees a 25% import duty placed on all 'pick-ups) is abolished then expect the ute to be onsale the next day.
And for the record I love drinking Fosters, although I am somewhat the minority. Crikey! Throw another shrimp on the barby, mate.

i think the ute would really be a good seller here in the states. i have recieved 5 brocures now from holden and the one that really gets the most looks is with out a doubt, the Ute. i wouldn't change the name personally, but i'm sure they will if they ever do import it, but its a very practical vehcile, its fast, its comfortable, and it has the utility and towing capacity that would be useful to most consumers that don't need a full-size truck. Ford's Falcon XR8 is also a very very nice looking vehicle. its everybit as powerful and good looking as the Holden!

Also Tasmanian - Cascade is a very fine drop indeed.

And I agree that domestic-market Fosters is pretty bad.

The SSR is not a truck, and it isn't even remotely the same market as the El Camino would be.

The SSR is purely a stylish cruiser for the well heeled meant to be enjoyed on weekends at car shows with the top down, just like the Ford Thunderbird, and just like the Plymouth Prowler.

It isn't for burning the competition with eleventy billion horsepower, carving up the twisties, demolishing the environment off-road, or running to the lumbaryard and making the rear sag. I guess by your logic the Prowler and Thunderbird were pretty worthless too, but there is a hot market for those types of vehicles whether we like them or not.

I voted for the Ute, and here's one story about GM selling it here from 10/28/03.

General Motors' Australian brand Holden eagerly anticipated U.S. President George W. Bush's visit Down Under country this past week when, it was hoped, the presidential push for a bilateral trade agreement will speed up the so-far long drawn-out process. GM is poised to ship its first batch of Pontiac GTO coupes to the U.S., and has several more models in the pipeline.

Next up would be the replacement for the long retired Chevrolet El Camino SS, based on Holden's muscular V-8-powered Utility. Holden CEO Peter Hanenberger says it would be next to go should the U.S. "Chicken Tax," which loads a 25-percent duty on imported utes, be waived under a new BTA. A BTA with Thailand is also in the mix, a new market Holden has just declared for its rear-wheel drive Commodore V-6 and V-8 sedans, which currently face an 80 percent import duty. Conversely, utilities assembled in Thailand attract a five percent tariff slug entering Australia.
