One option I'm throwing around is wating 2 years and trying to pick up one used.

Hopefuly it'll have the resale value of a Trans Am or something like that (low miles under 20K)

I know only 18,000 are produced a year, how does that compare to a car like the Trans Am or another limited car like the Impalla SS (94-96)

I was also thinking of geting a automatic, although I would prefer a manual right now, I'm thinking their will be a demand for manuals and I might be able to get a great deal on a auto.

what do you think?

Well with my 95 Impala with 22,000 miles i could probably get between $19,000 and $20,000 and MSRP was somewhere aound $24,000

I hope it has high resale value due to it being the first of the new GTO's, but I think it depends on what comes next year for options, etc. Also depends on how well these sell.. I've thought about waiting myself but I have no patience. Lord knows I lost my a$$ on my '95 z28 and I hope that won't happen with the GTO.

In the short term, there is no way that you will not lose money (on paper, at least) buying a new car. I think the only way you would ever be able to make money buying a new GTO is long-term. That will depend a lot on if the car lives up to it's hype.

Now, as for short term value vs. new cost - it will depend on if the car has more or less problems than others, new model year options and how the car is received once it hits the street. There is certainly a bunch of negativity from 'car guys' about the vehicle - but as they start to see them, that may change.
